Following weeks filled with rumors, the Battlefield 6 battle royale is finally here. It places EA's FPS in direct competition with CoD in all areas, and it is a promising start.
Whether you are completely new to the genre or a Warzone refugee, here is RedSec, Battlefield 6's Battle Royale, explained.
Is RedSec Free?
Yes, it is. EA has essentially copy-pasted CoD's blueprint by releasing a full priced game in the form of Battlefield 6 with a bulky multiplayer mode and a relatively lean single-player campaign, followed by a free-to-play battle royale mode (with an extra).
Anyone can access RedSec from their platform of choice. Players who already own Battlefield 6 have no benefits outside of already having progressed on their loadouts (relevant for the Custom Weapon Drops) and having a 5% XP boost in everything.
What Is Gauntlet?
Alongside RedSec, Battlefield 6 also added a new game-mode called Gauntlet. This one is also free and takes place in Fort Lyndon, the Battle Royale map. Limited to squads of four, Gauntled pits teams against each other in randomized missions. Here's how it goes:
- First Mission- Eight squads fight for mission completion. Completing objectives and getting kills get you points. The bottom two squads when the mission ends are eliminated.
- Second Mission- Repeat the same process but with only six squads. Top four make it to the next one.
- Third Mission- Four squads fight for the two places available in the final.
- Fourth Mission- The top two squads face against each other to see who is the final winner.
And what missions are available?
Image Via Electronic Arts.- Circuit- Capture and hold consoles. Very similar to Domination. Earn points for every 20 seconds per controlled consoled.
- Contract- Revives and kills earn one point each. Wiping a squad removes it from the game entirely. All players are periodically spotted to prevent camping. Mission ends when the timer runs out or when enough squads are eliminated (depends on the round).
- Deadlock- Similar to King of The Hill, Deadlock has capture points that become periodically available. Squads get one point for every 3 seconds controlling a zone.
- Decryption- Grab a beacon and calibrate it. This is automatically done as long as you are holding it and aren't sprinting. Standing still will calibrate it faster, walking will do it slower. Calibrating a beacon for 50 seconds earns you 10 points.
- Extraction- Grab data drives from consoles and deliver them to a drone to extract them. Get 3 points for each extracted drive. Players can carry up to 10 drives at once.
- Heist- Only available in the final mission, the Heist is a take on the classic Capture the Flag genre. Grab a case from your enemy's HQ and bring it back to yours. Dropping it will leave it there for 60 seconds, after which it will return to its original position. Each successful capture grants 10 points.
- Vendetta- The first player to get a kill is marked as the High Value Target and is revealed for everyone. Surviving as the HVT will net your squad 1 point per 5 seconds. Killing the HVT will make you the next HVT.
- Wreckage- Inspired by Rush, Wreckage has you transporting bombs which need to be detonated at specific locations. Bombs start ticking as soon as you pick them up. If you fail to plant them in time, you explode and die. Destroyed M-COMs give 10 points, disarmed bombs give 5.
A new mode, called Rodeo, will be released later during Season 1. All classes will use their default Loadouts, which will transfer from Battlefield 6's multiplayer, so players who already owned the game will have an inherent advantage with stronger weapons.
RedSec, Explained
Image Via Electronic Arts.RedSec, Battlefield 6's Battle Royale, takes place in Fort Lyndon. This is a massive map with a variety of notable areas. Unlike most other Battle Royales, players are not dropped from a single plane, but instead from multiple helicopters. The position of your heli will influence which areas you can reach first.
All players start with a Second Chance, a free redeployment after the first time they are full-killed. After enough ring closures the Second Chance will become unavailable even if you didn't consume it.
Beside Second Chance, players can also respawn via Respawn Points, communication towers. The live player needs to stay inside the point radius, which will start blasting a siren and blink red in every player's map. After the needed time, all dead members of the squad will be redeployed above the Respawn Point area.
Image Via Electronic Arts.Players who return after a certain point in a RedSec game will already have a primary weapon equipped. Redeploying early into a game will mean that you will only come with your favorite sidearm.
Classes are present in RedSec, but they do not work exactly as they do in Battlefield 6 multiplayer. For starters, Loadouts are irrelevant unless you find a Custom Weapon Drop, which will allow you to receive one of your favorite weapons (which you can customize via the Loadout menu).
All classes have access to Thermite Sabotage. Interact with an enemy vehicle by pressing E in close range and you will apply a damage over time effect to the vehicle and all passengers.
Here's how the classes differ in RedSec:
Assault
- Starts with Assault Ladder and High Explosive Launcher.
- Assault Rifle as signature weapon (faster draw times and faster shooting after a sprint).
- Completes the respawn point radius quicker.
- Passive Ability 1- Armor Replating is 33% Quicker.
- Passive Ability 2- High Explosive Launcher has 5 rounds.
- Passive Ability 3- High Explosive Launcher shots generate 5 fused submunitions (higher AOE).
- Passive Ability 4- Class gadget resupply rate increases by 10% with each improvement. Effect resets upon death.
Engineer
- Starts with Repair Tool and Aim-Guided Launcher (starts as a normal launcher).
- SMG as signature weapon (improve hip-fire control).
- Takes less explosives damage when near friendly vehicles and prevents them from being occupied by hostiles.
- Passive Ability 1- Launcher becomes aim-guided (controlled by mouse or right analog-stick after being launched).
- Passive Ability 2- Damage vehicles temporarily reduces their repair effectiveness.
- Passive Ability 3- Aim-Guided Launcher hits temporarily immobilize vehicles.
- Passive Ability 4- Class gadget resupply rate increases by 10% with each improvement. Effect resets upon death.
Recon
- Starts with a Recon Drone.
- Sniper Rifle as signature weapon (reduced weapon sway, quicker rechambering, and better breath control for steadier aim).
- Looking at hostiles while ADS will automatically spot them.
- Passive Ability 1- Recon Drone can drop explosives.
- Passive Ability 2- Downing an enemy will automatically spot allies around them for a time.
- Passive Ability 3- Recon Drone can self-destruct for AOE damage.
- Passive Ability 4- Class gadget resupply rate increases by 10% with each improvement. Effect resets upon death.
Support
- Starts with Smoke Grenade Launcher.
- LMG as signature weapon (Faster ADS times and no sprint penalty while holding an LMG).
- Distribute health packs to teammates when they directly interact with you (seems to work as long as you are close to squadmates).
- Passive Ability 1- Armor and ammo carrying capacity increased.
- Passive Ability 2- Drag downed soldiers faster and quicker revives.
- Passive Ability 3- Smoke Grenade Launcher gives faster revives for everyone inside the smoke, slows downed bleedout, and provides health regen.
- Passive Ability 4- Class gadget resupply rate increases by 10% with each improvement. Effect resets upon death.
The ring deals a ton of damage and will start dealing damage even if you're not outside of it. You'll get a warning if you're close to the edge and will start burning if you remain too close. It does not consume armor, though.
Unlike in Battlefield 6's multiplayer, players in RedSec can equip armor, in classic Battle Royale fashion. This increases Time-To-Kill and prevents one shots from the majority of weapons (higher rarity sniper rifles can still net one-shot kills with headshots).
Loot
Loose loot is found randomly spread throughout the map, but weapons are only found in chests. Relevant areas (the ones named on the map) will have a higher concentration of chests, and a higher number of rare ones. There are three types of chests:
- Common- Contain weapons, ammo, gadgets, and throwables.
- Rare- Same as common but in higher quality. Can also contain Strike Packages, similar to CoD killstreak rewards. They are black-and-red.
- Class Specific- These are orange chests which will contain rewards specific to your class. The player who opens the chest determines the contents', which will frequently included a highly-upgraded signature weapon for their class. It can also contain upgraded gadgets that synergize with that same class.
Guns
Image Via Electronic Arts.Weapons come in the following rarities:
- Common (White)- 25 attachment points.
- Uncommon (Green)- 30 attachment points.
- Rare (Blue)- 60 attachment points.
- Advanced (Purple)- 90 attachment points.
- Superior (Orange)- 100 attachment points.
- Unique (Red)- As many attachment points as you've put into it.
Advanced and Superior weapons are usually only found as mission rewards. Unique weapons can only be in Custom Weapon Drops (or looted from enemies who got one). Looting a Custom Weapon Drop will allow you to equip any weapon you've customized and named as favorite in your Loadout. They're usually the most powerful weapons in the game.
Weapons can be upgraded by finding their respective kit. SMGs are upgraded with PDW kits, LMGs with MG kits, Assault Rifles and Carbines with Assault Rifle kits, Snipers and DMRs with Marksman Kits, Shotguns with Shotgun kits. Upgrading a weapon will allow you to choose extra attachments between two choices. The game will tell you what benefits you'll get.
Weapons can be upgraded from Common to Advanced. You cannot upgrade a weapon to Superior through a kit, you can only loot it directly.
Missions
Image Via Electronic Arts. There are eight missions in total in RedSec. They are:
- Data Extraction- Collect data drives and deliver them to a drone.
- Demolition Crew- Destroy marked object(s) by picking up a bomb and planting it. Make sure it isn't defused by a squad on a Counter Mission before it explodes.
- Headhunter- A player with multiple kills will be marked as a High Value Target. You will see their location on the map, which will be frequently updated. Eliminate them to complete the mission.
- High Value Assets- Control assets by staying in the designated area. Enemies can counter mission by capturing one of the assets.
- Marked- One player in your squad will be targeted and revealed by nearby tracking devices. Destroy the devices and keep the target alive to complete the mission.
- Signal Decryption- Align two antennas into the same point. Once they are aligned, move to that point and stay in the area until the percentage is maxed.
- Tank Hunter- Receive a drop of anti-tank gear (mines or launchers). Eliminate the marked tank or steal it to complete the mission.
- Weapons Cache- Grab bolt cutters and head to the designated cache. Interact with it and wait for it to open to complete the mission.
Missions can be chosen via the map screen. Sometimes you will be able to choose between two or three, other times you will be limited to one. You can see the mission rewards before you accept them. Completing the mission will drop a Mission Reward cache nearby, with the exception of Weapons Cache, which has the rewards inside it.
Completing missions is also the best way to get XP, which is how you get access to higher Passive Ability levels.
Vehicles
Image Via Electronic Arts. There are currently five types of vehicles in RedSec:
- Armored car with a mounted machine gun. Fits a full squad.
- Quad bike that can only fit a duo.
- Boat with a mounted machine gun. Fits a full squad.
- Helicopters which can fit full squads.
- Tanks that can only be obtained via opening special containers using Vehicle Key Cards, a rare mission reward.
Keep in mind that vehicles are instantly destroyed when they leave the ring, so don't get adventurous.
