After multiple years of public turmoil surrounding its development, Subnautica 2 finally hit our digital shelves. This is only its Early Access release, though, a beginning. There’s a lot more to come soon.
Here is everything that is coming to Subnautica 2 in its first two Early Access updates and beyond, according to the game’s official roadmap.
Subnautica 2 released in Early Access on PC and Xbox Series consoles on May 14th, 2026. On the day after, the team at Unknown Worlds immediately released the game’s official roadmap explaining their initial plans.
This roadmap includes EA 1.1 and 1.2 updates and a tab simply described as “future”, but the team elaborated on their process in the post itself. Just like the original game, Subnautica 2 will receive constant updates that will look dissimilar in scope and focus.
EA 1.1 is almost entirely focused on Quality of Life fixes. Beyond the many QoL changes planned, the team also hopes to add a Sprint option, move passive biomod slots, and a storage cache. This will be a smaller, quicker update meant to address the most pressing issues people are having with the game.
Sometime after this initial patch, we will have EA 1.2, another smaller update focused on Quality of Life features again, but aimed specifically at co-op players. Notable planned additions include the option to revive your friends and speak with them via an in-game voice chat.
After these initial, specific updates, Unknown Worlds touched on what players are more excited for: new stuff. Subnautica 2 is a pretty extensive game even in its initial Early Access state, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t left us wanting more.
Planned major updates mentioned by the developers include:
Unfortunately, there are neither dates nor time windows for any of these. The original Subnautica spent over three years in Early Access, but it didn’t come out as feature-complete as its successor. We would consider it safe to bet on Subnautica 2 staying in Early Access for at least two years, though.
Unknown Worlds will certainly keep us updated, but they also want to hear from you. If you’re actively playing the game, make sure to use the feedback tool every time you encounter a bug or something you’d like to see changed.
