A little over 19 years and 1 month following its original release, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered comes to players all over the world. One of the most beloved entries in Bethesda's most successful franchise has been rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 by Bethesda and Virtuos Games.
What does this remaster bring with it? When does it come out? In which platforms is it available to play? We'll answer these questions and more below.
Naming this a remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is weird. This goes way beyond what we usually expect of an update with such a name, much closer to what we see in most remakes. The entire game has been graphically rebuilt using Unreal Engine 5.
This remake comes with all original addons and story expansions, so there are dozens and dozens of hours here. Virtuos tried to stick as close as possible to the original with this remake, calling it "a love letter".
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered tries to fuse Unreal Engine 5 with the original game's engine, using the former simply as a way to visually express the mechanics of the latter.
"Every single asset [...] was completely redesigned", and this remaster, using the latest version of Unreal Engine 5, has an entirely rebuilt lighting system. Virtuos are also using quite an impressive lip-sync system, that is supposed to work well with all kinds of species in the Elder Scrolls world.
On top of the remastered visuals, this update also brings redesigned gameplay, UI, character models, audio, and more. There are also a ton of new lines of dialogue, giving a more unique voice to each character.
The entire presentations seems to have one intent in mind: modernizing a cult classic without erasing what inspired it. Some iconic building blocks remain: the minigames function the same way mechanically; the quirky, sometimes hilariously cringe enigmatic voice lines remain unchanged. You can't improve on perfection, after all.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered seems like a great balance of respecting what veterans loved in an incredibly remarkable title, while also bringing it into a shape that players are more familiar with in 2025.
It is available to play right now. If you're a gamepass subscriber, you can download it already. For everyone else, you can buy it for 54,99€. Despite having been announced on the XBOX channel, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is also available on PS5.
