I spent some time figuring out how the shovel works in Crimson Desert, and it is one of those tools that feels pointless at first but turns out pretty useful once you understand it.
It is not for combat at all. You cannot hit enemies with it. Its whole purpose is to dig up hidden items from specific spots that you would otherwise miss during normal exploration.

The shovel is a simple utility tool. You use it to dig at certain marked locations in the world.
If you try digging anywhere else, the game will not allow it. When used correctly, it can give you rare items that are hard to find through regular gameplay.
The easiest way I found early on is to just buy it. Head to Hernand, which is the first major town you will spend time in. Look for Alden’s Hernand Provisionary Shop near the center of town.
You can spot it easily because it sits across from Rhett and Turnali’s smithy. The shovel costs 26 Bronze and is placed with other tools like fishing rods and mallets.
You might also come across a shovel while exploring, but that feels inconsistent. Buying it is faster and more reliable.

Using the shovel is not complicated, but the game does not make it obvious either. First, open your equipment menu and equip the shovel. Then go to a valid digging spot. These are fixed locations in the world.
Now comes the part that confused me at first. You need to aim the camera downward toward the ground. If you do not do this, the dig prompt will not show up.
Press the action button, which is Square on PlayStation or the equivalent on your platform. If you see a red circle, that means you are not standing in a valid digging area. Move around a bit until the prompt appears.
One confirmed spot I tested is in the Hernand Highlands. Head southwest of Unicorn Cliff and look for a small ruin or encampment. That is where I was able to use the shovel successfully.
At that location, I dug up Skyroot. It is a rare crop that sells for 1.90 silver and is also used in research systems in the game.
