Black Myth Wrong won't feel too difficult if you were bracing for a souslike. But although the
Destined Ones do have it easier than the Tarnished, this Journey to the West can get bumpy at times.
Each chapter of the game usually comes with a significant difficulty spike eventually, and those can get really challenging if you’re taking on the optional bosses. So, to help ease you into your adventure, we've prepared six crucial beginner tips.
Skill refunds in Black Myth Wukong are free. As long as you have access to a Shrine, you can
Restructure your build. So when you try something, fully invest into it.
Don't dip your toes in two stance trees, place all those sparks into Smash — choose whichever stance you prefer, but as we covered here, there is a definite best.
Each build will excel in different situations, and since the game empowers you to take advantage of it, do so.
Change your build often, and fully commit every time.
Although Sparks can be refunded as much as you want, the story is different when it comes to upgrading your Spirits, or crafting weapons and armor. Here, the system is similar to what you’d see in a Souslike.
There are no unique items that can craft multiple weapons, like there are in Souls games, but the resources you need to craft items and upgrade Spirits are consumables. If you change your mind too quickly regarding these choices, you’ll have to start grinding to keep up with the game’s difficulty.
When you have enough Blood of the Iron Bull, for example, upgrade your Spirits to +8 as much as you want. +9 and +10 requires Knot of Voidness, though, and those are really hard to come by. So you’re better off keeping your Spirits at +8, unless you’re sure you won’t be swapping them for a while.
Higher level weapons and armor also require rare items and cost a lot of Will, so be mindful of those decisions too, and follow a similar mindset. If you’re swimming in Silk, go ahead and craft as many armor sets as you want.
Experiment as much as you can with your Sparks, but be patient and careful with your Spirit Upgrades, Armor and Weapon crafts.
The closest Souls game to Black Myth Wukong — and the similarities are sparse — is Sekiro. You’re stuck with essentially one weapon choice and, as we’ll highlight here, an oppressive offense is your best defense.
Some of the bosses you find in your Journey to the West have so many moves, that you’ll be amazed to find them come up with a new way to destroy you in your 10th or 20th attempt at killing them.
A lot of these tools are only available to them when you give them space and time, though. Be aggressive, be relentless, and their arsenal will shrink. Yes, you’ll be in more danger, but with how strong the spells are and with the amount of tricks you have up your sleeve, you can handle a bit of danger.
Embody Sun Wukong’s hubris and don’t enter into the boss arenas afraid of what they’ll to do you, you are the one to be feared.
We already went over how you should be flexible with your build in the first tip, but we want to reinforce that aspect specifically when it comes to spells. The more you progress through Black Myth Wukong, the more impossible you are to deal with.
As the Destined One, you start having so many tricks that the game has to start cheating in order to impose a challenge. Often, this comes in the way of bosses ignoring your spells or being immune to stagger at specific situations.
Eventually, some bosses will just not care about your spells at all, no matter what point of the boss fight you’re in. Again, Sparks are refundable for free, so don’t waste your time and mana throwing out Immobilizes that your enemy instantly breaks. Refund those points and put them into an important stat, or into a defensive Spell like Hard as Stone.
Drop your spells or choose different ones if the bosses you’re in are starting to ignore their effects.
Although you have almost complete freedom when it comes to leveling up in Black Myth Wukong, there are some caps that the game has in place. One of those is the focus levels, and for good reason.
You start your journey with a single focus point available. When you fill the bar, you unlock a stronger heavy attack, or you can spend it in the middle of varied combos for extra damage.
As you invest Sparks into your stance(s), you will unlock more focus points as you reach certain thresholds. These focus points cap out at four, which will be the strongest power spike you have in the entire game.
This fourth focus point is so powerful that it is the only one which you can’t hold onto. If you charge your focus by holding down your heavy attack button, you also can’t charge it all the way to level four.
This is the game telling you that this tool is so oppressive, that you can only have access to it when you’re in the heat of battle, building as much focus as possible.
Listen to the game and rush this fourth upgrade as fast as you can. You won’t regret it.
If you’re reading this list, chances are you will also follow guides for Black Myth Wukong, if you haven’t already. Let’s suppose you weren’t considering it, though. Maybe you love that sense of discovery and don’t want it ruined by checking a guide that might spoil some exciting parts of the game.
That is entirely understandable, but the upside of following a guide is much bigger than the possibility of having a surprise spoiler. The biggest similarity between this game and a From Software title is how obscure and hard to complete some of the questlines are, and how impossible some bosses are to find.
You can check this out for yourself. When you finish up a chapter, before starting a new one, open your journal and check how many characters, Yaoguai Chiefs, Kings, and Meditation Spots you missed.
Most times, you’ll have missed a ton of things. You’ll sometimes miss entire secret areas with beautiful vistas, excellent cutscenes and even better boss fights. Those boss fights often come with some of the best loot available in the game, and you can easily miss it.
Here’s what we recommend: when you’re done with a chapter, look for what parts of your journal need completing. Follow one of our many guides, and see what you missed. This way you don’t get spoiled, and you don’t leave any sweet loot behind.
