Black Myth Wukong is a mostly linear action game, in the vein of something like 2018’s God of War.
Much like that game, though, a lot of content can be missed if you strictly follow the main story in Black Myth Wukong.
Items, hidden NPCs, and even secret optional bosses lie in the darkest corners of the map, and can easily be overlooked.

Luckily, the game’s journal updates every time you start a chapter, so it is easy to tell if you’ve missed something.
Let’s go over all bosses found in Chapter 1 in Black Myth Wukong, including the secret ones, so you can complete that journal if you missed something on your first time through.

Bosses in Black Myth Wukong can be divided between three categories:
A fourth, optional category is Spirits, which are either stronger versions of normal enemies (Lesser Yaoguais), or weaker bosses, like the Wandering Wight.
In Black Myth Wukong, Yaoguai Kings encapsulate all the main bosses but contain a lot of optional ones too. These are the hardest and longest fights in Black Myth Wukong.
They’re always introduced with a cutscene, and usually give you the best rewards, like new weapons to craft or very strong items.
Yaoguai Chiefs in Black Myth Wukong are essentially secondary bosses, smaller fights that are usually easier than Yaoguai Kings, but that still give great rewards.
Some of these are also introduced through cutscenes, and many are fought through the main storyline.
Character bosses in Black Myth Wukong are usually even easier fights that don’t last long, and ones that often end up with your enemy giving up, instead of you killing them. They often progress quest lines or unlock access to new NPCs.
Lastly, Spirit bosses are quick fights, lacking cutscene presentations, which only award you with a Spirit of the enemy you just fought.
There are a lot of these bosses in Black Myth Wukong, and they can range from very easy to quite challenging.
Once you unlock their Spirit, you can usually use one of their signature moves as their Spirit attack.
There are a total of 11 bosses in Black Myth Wukong’s first chapter. They are five Yaoguai Kings, five Yaoguai Chiefs, and one Character Boss.
The location of the bosses in Black Myth Wukong are listed by the order in which you meet them, with the two final ones being considered secret bosses.
Out of these eleven, five of them are optional boss fights.
These are: Guangzhi, Wandering Wight, Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang, Elder Jinchi, and Red Loong.
From the Outside The Forest Shrine, go past the first couple of enemies in front of you and take the first left, shown on the image above.
Keep walking through that dirt path and you’ll end up at a bridge, with a single archer on the other side.
Cross the bridge, and you’ll see another gate to your left, exactly like the one at the end of the bridge. Beyond that gate you’ll find Guangzhi.
From the same Outside The Forest Shrine, make your first past the two enemies, and instead of going left, go forward.
You’ll find a stronger enemy with an axe guarding a bridge. Kill him, and cross the bridge.
From that point onwards, just look to your left and you should see the Wandering Wight pacing back and forth in the clearing shown above.
Travel to the Snake Trail Shrine in Bamboo Grove, and make your way inside the building behind it.
There is a passage to the right, as shown above. Make your way through it, and jump down into the small river.
From there, just follow the river until you reach a clearing.
Kill the two enemies hiding inside the water, and make your way forward until you are ambushed by the intimidating frog Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang.
As one of the secret bosses in Black Myth Wukong’s first chapter, Elder Jinchi is much harder to find.
He is unlocked through a sort of side-quest, which involves ringing all three bells spread throughout the Black Wind Mountain region.
The good news is that they’re all easy to find, especially if you’re following this guide to find all the optional bosses.
The first bell you can ring sits right at the end of Guangzhi’s Arena, pictured above.
The second one can be found by traveling to the Marsh Of The White Mists Shrine.
Go backwards down the stairs, and take a right as soon as you reach the clearing below. Go up the stairs and you’ll find the bell.
Lastly, the third bell can also be found from the same Shrine.
Now, make your way forwards through the arena where you fight the Whiteclad Noble and, instead of walking through the huge gate, head into the opening on your left, as shown below.
You’ll find a few enemies on the other side, with the last bell right behind them.
Ring it and, if you’ve already rung the two others previously, you’ll be automatically teleported to the Ancient Guanyin Temple, where you can fight Elder Jinchi.
The last boss of Black Myth Wukong’s Chapter one can only be fought after you’ve progressed a bit into chapter two.
You can access this fight after you’ve taken down the Second Rat Prince and the King of Flowing Sands.
To the left side of the arena, you have the Valley of Despair Shrine.
If you’ve been there before, just travel to it. From there, make your way into the cave past the two enemies, and go left, as shown in the previous image.
Jump down into the large arena. If you haven’t done this before, and if you left the King of Flowing Sands alive, he’ll summon his first son. Take him down.
After doing so, if the boss itself didn’t break the intricate wall with statues that you can see to the left of the arena, you can break yourself using the Wandering Wight spirit attack.
Make your way through the crack in the wall and open the chest inside.
With the Loong Scales in your possession, you are now able to unlock the way to most Loong bosses in the game.
You can tell you’re close to one, when a voice starts speaking in riddles, which always start with “For what deed (...)”. If you ever hear one of those voices, run after it and you’ll find a Loong boss.
Red Loong can be found in the Forest of Wolves. Travel again to the Outside The Forest Shrine, head left as if you’re headed toward Guangzhi, but instead of crossing the bridge, take another left turn.
Keep going forward until you go past a small pond followed by a small clearing with two enemies. Kill them, and go left up the discreet path shown above.
When you reach the top, just jump through the fallen tree and get close to the waterfall on your right. Interact with it, and the way to Red Loong’s boss arena will open.
