Despite the numerous Soulslike comparisons, which started back when the first trailers came out years ago, Black Myth Wukong has a lot more in common with games like God of War 2018.
The RPG progression system, where you upgrade both your skills and your weapons and armor, is crucial for helping you keep up with the rising difficulty.
Much like in GoW, you can opt to just build newly unlocked armor sets, but you can also stick to the ones you already crafted previously if you prefer, by improving their stats. Here’s how you can upgrade your armor in Black Myth Wukong.
You can only get access to the armor upgrading system during the third chapter of the game. Before that, you’re stuck with crafting new armor sets if you want to raise your defense stat.
The specific moment when you’re able to embark on the quest that unlocks armor upgrading is when you meet the character named Chen Loong, an old dragon. Completing his quest allows you to access the Zodiac Village, where you’ll find the Blacksmith.
Teleport to the North Shore of the Bitter Lake Shrine in Bitter Lake. Turn toward the ocean and the massive turtle, and run to the shore. From here, go right along the shoreline until you spot the old Loong with his green robes in the water.
Approaching him will start his boss fight which, like most character fights, ends before you entirely deplete his health bar. Once he gives up, he’ll ask you for some pills.
Go back to the Shrine, and teleport to the Cellar, in Chapter Two’s Crouching Tiger Temple region. Xu Dog will be tending to their fire immediately next to the shrine.
If they aren’t there, follow our boss guide and kill Lang-Li-Guhh-Baw. Exhaust Xu Dog’s dialogue following the fight, and they’ll teleport to the Cellar.
Talk to Xu Dog in the Cellar after defeating Chen Loong, and she’ll give you the Special-made Bone-Strengthening Pellet. Teleport back to the North Shore of the Bitter Lake Shrine, return to Chen Loong and give him the medicine.
He’ll give you the Ruyi Scroll, which unlocks an entirely new region, the Painted Realm. You’ll be able to teleport to it from any Shrine from this point forward.
In the Zodiac Village, make your way towards the open area past Chen Loong’s hut, and you’ll find a huge tiger hammering away at a sword massive enough to make Guts proud.
That is the Yin Tiger, the Blacksmith. He’s the one who can upgrade your armor. He is also a very difficult boss fight, but one worth taking. After you take him down, talk to him again, and you’ll be able to unlock a third Curio slot.
