Originally, this crowd-funding feature was introduced as the Compendium – an in-game subscription service for a particular time where players get rewards after completing each "quest". However, in 2015, it was renamed to The Battle Pass, adding more jaw-dropping rewards. Recently, at The International 2024, this feature was reverted to its original name, The Compendium, with a rewards system similar to The Battle Pass.
In 2021, The Internationals had the biggest prize pool in esports history, 40 million USD. Team Spirit, the tournament's champions for that year, took home 18 million USD in tournament winnings. Recently, Valve announced that The International 2024 will have a base prize pool of 1.6 million USD after the tournament's prize pool decreased for two consecutive years.

Valve has unveiled its star-studded broadcast talent lineup for The International 2024 (TI13). A total of 36 renowned casters, analysts, and hosts will grace the stage, bringing their expertise and passion to the biggest Dota 2 tournament of the year.
The first International was held in 2011 at Gamescom in Germany to promote the game’s release. After that, TI has been held in different cities around the world. These cities include Seattle (2012-2017), Shanghai, and Bucharest.
Copenhagen, Denmark will have the honour of hosting this year's iteration of the tournament, The International 2024. Over the years The International has evolved, with regional qualifiers and crowdfunding to grow the prize pool.
The International 2024 will consist of sixteen teams. Six of them earned a direct invite to the tournament due to their marvellous performance at various LAN events throughout the season. The other ten found their way to the tournament through qualifiers.
Regional qualifiers have been held in key regions like South America, Asia and Europe so teams from all over the world can participate. Get an overview of the 2024 qualifiers here.
Direct invites will be given to teams based on their performance throughout the year. Thus, this way, the most consistent teams throughout the season ensured their spot in the tournament. The list of invited teams has already been announced and is:

The International 2024 will feature some of the best Dota teams in the world. However, some of the more established teams did not qualify - like Virtus.Pro, NAVI, Team Secret, LGD and OG. The tournament will feature the best players in the world, all fighting for a slice of the cake.
The teams will be selected in two phases: first will be direct invites and second will be winners of the regional qualifiers. All teams have been found already.
With a base prize pool of $1,600,000 - and potentially more, depending on potential contributions from the International Battle pass - the stakes are huge. The winning team will - if things go as we predict - receive 45 % of the total prize pool, and their names etched on the Aegis Of Immortals earning them a name in Dota 2 history.
The International 2024 will be an experience like no other for both live attendees and online viewers. Held at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen, the event will have more than just the main tournament. If you can’t make it in person, The International will most likely be streamed live on Twitch and YouTube. The broadcast will be global and will be available in multiple languages to cater to the diverse Dota 2 community.
Expect high-quality production, good commentary and behind-the-scenes content throughout the event.
We will watch SirActionSlacks and, hopefully, Kaci, wield the microphone for some interesting, weird, funny (and not funny?) interviews throughout the event.
The International Dota 2 is more than a tournament; it’s a celebration of the game’s community and the peak of esports.
