BLAST Slam I begins November 26th, featuring the top ten Dota 2 teams battling for a $1 million prize pool and the inaugural BLAST Dota title. The event is poised to be an intense battleground with riveting storylines, filled with a lot of chaos and excitement.
Let's break down the potential narratives of BLAST Slam I.
Team Liquid clashes with Gaimin Gladiators in the modern-day El Clásico. Gaimin holds a historical advantage, often leaving Liquid to settle for second place. However, Liquid defied the odds and overcame their mental barrier by defeating Gaimin Gladiators at The International 2024 grand final, thus ending their streak of second-place finishes.
But that’s history. A new era dawns for both teams, each adding a new face to its roster. While Liquid bid farewell to 33 and enlisted the services of Saberlight, GG brought in Watson for the outgoing Dyrachyo to bolster their respective lineups in the new season.
While strong on paper, both teams have struggled to replicate their success from the previous season. Both are unable to strike the right chord and establish themselves as a dominant force within the scene.
The matchup will be an interesting one, especially with BLAST Slam’s unique format, where the best-performing teams in the group stage will have a simpler path to the finals in the cross-group single-elimination gauntlet stage.
Given their current form, a victory might just be the need of the hour for either team and pivotal for their survival in the event. A podium finish for either one of them might just reinvigorate the fire dwelling within and set the tone for the rest of the year.
Team Falcons has become a dominant force in the Dota 2 scene. Gaining prominence in recent years, they have captured first-place finishes at many top-tier tournaments. Since its formation, the team's mission has been clear: to become the best team in the game.
Boasting a dynamic mix of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers, the team has proven its ability to adapt and overcome obstacles. They dominated the previous season, consistently securing podium finishes and winning most of the tournaments they participated in.
However, their biggest disappointment came at The International 2024, ending up in fourth place despite being one of the tournament favourites. Undeterred, they stormed into the new season, reaching three consecutive finals, in different tournaments, and winning two of them.
A rare defeat at the hands of HEROIC in the PGL Wallachia Season 2 final ignited a fire within them – it only fueled their determination. They bounced back to winning ways, claiming the titles at BetBoom Dacha Belgrade and DreamLeague Season 24 against seemingly stronger opponents.
Team Falcons are the favourites heading into BLAST Slam I but given the tournament’s format, a slight mistake could prove deadly. But then again, their mental fortitude is commendable and there’s no team in sight just yet, except Tundra Esports, who can clip their wings.
Many teams are turning over a new leaf this season. A select few have made significant progress, while others are still striving to establish a solid foundation. HEROIC’s start to the season has been exceptional, winning PGL Wallachia Season 2 against the formidable Team Falcons.
However, they couldn’t replicate the same level of success at DreamLeague Season 24, placing in the bottom half of the table. But a last-minute player change just before BLAST Slam I, where the organisation benched a player citing lack of work ethic, will put them through a litmus test.
Speaking of the litmus test, OG Esports is in the house! They've faced many challenges in recent years, not living up to the OG benchmark, especially for a team with so many accolades to its name. The struggle to field a stable roster has been the biggest challenge which has also proven detrimental to their growth.
OG’s current roster has plenty of experience and with the signing of 23Savage and xNova (on trial), the team looks strong on paper. But transforming that strength into reality is a different thing altogether – something OG has failed to achieve.
They will have the home advantage in BLAST Slam I and will carry the hopes of an entire nation on its shoulders. More importantly, passionate OG fans will like to see their favourite org rise from the ashes. The only question is: Can OG turn over a new leaf?
Another team to look out for is BetBoom Team. They have been on a roll lately, reaching the finals of DreamLeague Season 24 and losing to Team Falcons, thus ending up in second place. Historically, they have always been consistent and a worthy opponent. But there’s a catch: they have always fumbled at the last hurdle.
BetBoom’s inability to break the ceiling during crucial moments has been their undoing, including but not limited to, closing out long games or going past the second place. But there is always hope, that someday, the barrier gets breached. Perhaps BLAST Slam I might be the turning point.
Led by the charismatic, two-time TI champion, Neta “33” Shapira, who captained Team Liquid to its, and his, second TI victory last season, Tundra Esports is one of the most exciting teams heading into BLAST Slam I.
The roster boasts a formidable lineup of talented players, including the analytical genius 33, the dynamic support duo of Whitemon and Saksa, the skilled carry Nightfall, and the rising star Lorenof – a dream set of players for any organisation.
They nearly upset Team Falcons at BetBoom Dacha Belgrade 2024, fighting to a thrilling five-game series before falling short of their first trophy of the season – showing a glimpse of their full potential. Their presence itself is a threat to every team in the tournament but can they break through the rest and become the best?
PARIVISION, Team Spirit and Xtreme Gaming are the collective three that head into BLAST Slam I with a point to prove.
PARIVISION’s rise this season is an unexpected, yet pleasant surprise. They have been consistent so far but will look forward to pushing themselves even further and securing at least a podium finish – a result that might set the tone for the remainder of the season.
Team Spirit's new strategy is yielding positive results. The experienced players are mentoring the young talent, and the team's consistent performance proves the effectiveness of their approach. BLAST Slam’s unique format will test their mettle even further and help them focus better. A podium finish will be a cherry on top.
Xtreme Gaming heads into the tournament with a semi-new roster. Having parted ways with Ame, the Chinese team has the ardent task of carrying the hopes of an entire nation on its shoulders, especially being the only representative from China. They march into the event as the dark horse.
