We caught up with Matvey “Miero” Vasyunin from BetBoom Team for an exclusive interview ahead of BLAST Slam VII Copenhagen. BetBoom will kick off their BLAST run after an impressive victory at PGL Wallachia Season 8, hoping to keep their momentum going.
In this interview, that was conducted before PGL Wallachia Season 8, Miero shares his thoughts on the new patch, the evolving meta, what’s stopping BetBoom from becoming the best Dota 2 team in the world, and expectations heading into BLAST SLAM VII.
Hey Miero, let’s begin with the new patch. What are your thoughts about the new Dota 2 patch?
The new patch is really refreshing for Dota. It’s quite interesting, and I’m really enjoying playing it. Yeah, that's it. The most op heroes have changed, we are getting new neutrals, new items, and some little changes in the map.
How do you see the new meta evolving?
Melee heroes are looking good in the new meta. Also, there are a lot of hero options in the offlane role. Heroes like Batrider, Visage, and Tidehunter, to name a few, will be available for picking.
Okay, name a couple of heroes that are going to be the most useful in your particular role.
If I have to choose, then it would be Beastmaster, Tidehunter and Batrider. Batrider has more options for staying in the lane because of the movement speed from his first spell. Tidehunter is a good hero pick in the current meta, but it should be a last pick depending on the draft and situation. It won’t make sense to pick him early if the opponent has a Ursa or Monkey King.
Where does BetBoom currently stand compared to other teams?
We’ve been inconsistent for quite some time now, and I hope we will turn things around really soon. The new patch also helps because everyone gets a clean slate to build up again. To be honest, it’s been a real blessing for us, and I also believe that going forward, we will be one of the most stable teams performance-wise.

But why has the team been struggling?
We definitely struggled to get a good grasp on the meta in the previous patch. We lacked the required depth to play some of the old meta heroes, as well as the others. We also have a new coach, and we're working to identify our gameplay that aligns with the new patch.
What is stopping BetBoom from becoming the best team in the world right now?
I think nothing can stop us. We need time to adapt to this meta and find our play styles, and that’s going to happen soon. It's all about believing.
So what exactly needs to be done for that?
We need to become better at our communication, and with a new psychologist in our team, we might see those results soon. He is teaching us a lot of new things, with a focus on the more intricate details, and hopefully, that helps us to communicate and play better.
Is the role of a psychologist important in our industry?
It's not as important, but yeah, we need to adapt to changing circumstances. In a team where we are playing most of the time, you need to find a solution, and figure out how to tackle problems. It might be communication issues, psychological issues, etc., and psychologists can help with it.
What are your expectations heading into BLAST Slam VII?
The tournament is going to be interesting because of the new format. I hope we qualify for the LAN and get to play on the main stage.
How have you evolved as a player over the years?
I have learnt to focus on myself. It’s best to not watch other players, and only focus on yourself. But more importantly, don’t blame others for your bad performance and instead focus on becoming better.
