Sumail "SumaiL" Hassan is a prominent figure in the Dota 2 esports scene known for his unrivaled skills and impeccable game sense. He is one of the youngest players ever to win The International, the crown jewel Dota 2 world championship, and is currently playing for the famed Nigma Galaxy.
We caught up with Sumail for a quick chat on Nigma Galaxy’s current situation, competing on the big stage, the current Dota 2 patch and prevailing meta, expectations heading into BLAST Slam II and more.
What are your thoughts on the current state of Nigma Galaxy?
It's been interesting. We've played with Ghost before, so things are looking good at the moment.
How confident are you heading into BLAST Slam II with Ghost standing-in for Miracle?
We're feeling about 90% confident heading into the event. Our scrims against strong teams have been positive, and we've even seen them perform well against other top contenders. Besides that, having a coach is also a significant boost to our confidence.
How are things shaping up with Kuroky as coach?
Kuroky has the final say for all our strategies. The dynamics are interesting because he’s been playing Dota for nearly 20 years as a professional player but now he’s pivoted to coaching. The role seems to really suit him as he enjoys doing it, and it's been a real benefit to us.
Can you please elaborate?
He is the most knowledgeable and experienced out of us and has a remarkable ability to quickly analyze the meta, identify powerful heroes, and understand the current patch. As a team, we're focused on catching up to his speed of thinking and trusting him.
What changes are needed for Nigma to compete at the highest level?
Can it change? I don't know. We just have to keep doing our thing and not get too lazy with practices and just practice and talk about the game most of the time. More importantly, we need to be patient with the process.
Is Nigma lacking the synergy?
Yes, synergy is lacking, but I don't know what else to say. Yeah, I mean it's not there for sure but it’s somewhat there.
What do you miss the most about competing on the big stage?
The thrill of playing in front of a crowd is what I've always loved most. It makes everything feel so much more real and exciting, and it gives you an adrenaline rush you can't find anywhere else. That's the part I miss the most.
How has Dota 2 changed over the years?
Dota 2 has become more team-oriented and technical, moving away from individual plays and relying less on "gut feelings" or flashy maneuvers. There are just too many objectives to achieve, a necessity if you must say, and if you don’t secure those objectives then you’re heavily punished for it.
This has created a more structured, almost predictable, gameplay style. The skill gap between top players has also significantly narrowed; at this point, it often comes down to who wakes up on the right side of the bed or who is in a good mood.
Which hero is the most broken in the current patch/meta?
I think Huskar is the most broken. It’s not an overpowered hero but the concept of Huskar shouldn’t exist in Dota itself. He should have been removed from the game a long time ago. Picking Huskar is akin to a checkmate situation to be honest.
What changes would you like to see in the new patch?
They need to make some big changes again like they did with the XP runes, twin gates and stuff. I would prefer that they remove XP runes to be honest. It's a really rigged part of the game. but other than that, I think it's a really good patch. Every hero is viable somewhat and yeah, it's pretty nice.
Keep an eye out for more interviews in the coming days. Stay tuned!
