Gaimin Gladiators have been struggling for the past couple of months despite securing a second-place finish at The International 2024. The team underwent a roster shuffle, parting ways with Dyrachyo and recruiting Watson in his place, but things never picked up with this change.
They have been in a downward spiral since the change and things don't seem to be picking up. Before they head into BLAST Slam II, we caught up with the team's charismatic captain Seleri for an interview.
Let's dive into what the interview is all about!
How is the team coping with the recent criticism and trolling surrounding Gaimin Gladiators on social media?
I avoid reading any of it. It's a strategy I recommend. I enjoy reading fan comments when I'm watching football – the criticism and everything else is all part of the fun. But when you're a player, it's better to tune it out. People are just enjoying discussing the game. No harm done, but I simply don't read it. I'm generally pretty relaxed about these things irrespective of the outcome.
How is the atmosphere within Gaimin Gladiators with everything that’s been going on?
The team atmosphere is really good, though of course, it can always improve and be better. It's easy to maintain a good atmosphere when things are going well, but it's more challenging when they are going worse.
Our positive momentum from the last tournament definitely helped and it felt like we were improving, and even though we were knocked out, we lost to the teams that ultimately finished in the top two.
That perspective helps our morale; we felt like we were on an upward trend, even if it took a downturn later on, but looking at how well those teams performed makes our situation seem better.
How is Watson dealing with the whole ordeal considering the amount of flak the team has been receiving?
Watson has been handling the situation really well. He’s already proven himself to be a world-class carry player, and he's sure to win tournaments in the future. We're hoping to achieve that success with him at Gaimin Gladiators.
What kind of measures need to be taken to rectify the mistakes being made by the team?
We've been focusing on what made us successful in the past and what needs to be done to become successful again. Success often trickles down to the finer details and this season, there have been many instances where minor improvements could have made a big difference. So, we're focusing on learning from those small mistakes and taking it from there.
How do you envision the team to be again?
We aim for dominance, not necessarily one where we crush every opponent, though that's certainly welcome. We want to control the game, caring a lot about taking initiative and being able to control the outcome. If we lose, we want it to be because of our own mistakes, not because we were passive.
We want to be in control, we want to be in the driver’s seat, determining our own success or failure. Currently, we don't feel like we have that control, and we're working to change that.
Has the current patch contributed to Gaimin’s struggles as well?
I’ll speak for myself. Personally, I strongly dislike this current patch. It's frustrating that it's lasted so long. It's not a conspiracy or anything, but it's annoying to remember past patches that were much better suited to us.
This has happened twice now, where a less favourable patch arrives right before finals. And now, we've had this same patch for months. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way. Many players are probably tired of banning Alchemist every game, and now we have Lycan and Nyx destroying supports.
I'd love to see some changes. Hopefully, a larger patch is coming, but even a small one would be great, nerfing some of these heroes that are ruining the game, not just in competitive play, but also in matchmaking. It definitely impacts motivation when you're playing on the same patch over and over.
Crownfall is ending soon. What if Valve decides to drop a patch right in the middle of BLAST Slam II?
Now that would be fun, but hopefully, the patch is not super big because then everyone will get a headache. On second thoughts, I probably didn't think about that [new patch dropping midway], but I'm down for it. Just give us a patch!
As a captain, how difficult has this period been for you, especially with the roster change and disappointing results? How are ya’ll helping each other stay motivated?
It's tough because we've experienced such highs as a team. So, when things don't go as well as they should, it's a huge letdown. Anything outside the top three feels pretty bad for us so we're focusing on supporting each other and also keeping perspective, avoiding unnecessary negativity or becoming spiteful.
What do you think about your former teammate Dyrachyo and his new team, Tundra?
Dyrachyo just won a tournament with his new team and I'm really happy for him, especially after their reverse sweep. When he was with us, we were reverse-swept in Malaysia, so I know how awful that feels. I'm glad he got to experience the other side of that and got to focus on himself. Now it’s time to not have any spite and focus on moving forward.
What are your expectations heading into the tournament?
It's hard to predict what will happen. I know we're improving and could aim for the top three, but I try not to set expectations too high because we're already under pressure to perform. My personal goal is to play at the level I know I can and be consistent, excel at my strengths, and focus on things I’m good at. Hopefully, that will be enough to reach the top three. Personally, I'm focusing on my own performance because I know that's what matters most.
