Spirit opened 2025 as they ended 2024, by lifting a trophy. Since then, however, Vitality have leapfrogged them, and now look to be the dominant force in Counter-Strike in a year that previously felt destined to be Spirit's.
With the team having to miss out on IEM Melbourne because of health concerns, they now await their next event at BLAST Rivals, and ahead of the event, we sat down with their coach, hally, to discuss Spirit's form, their mental problems in some big games, and the gaps between the top teams.
You started off the year really well at BLAST Bounty, are you disappointed with results since then?
Indeed there is some disappointment, we want to win every tournament we participate in, but we've had some improvements over the season.
In the Katowice final we had some mental problems that meant we couldn't win there, during Pro League, some of our players fell ill and they weren't feeling 100%, that's why we lost there. In Lisbon, we played versus Vitality who are on a good roll, but the game was close, so if we compare that to the result in Katowice, it shows we're on the right track.
Touching on the mental problems in IEM Katowice, given that you won the event last year and the Major in Shanghai, why do mental problems still crop up after all that success and experience?
Maybe it was my fault, I spread the load incorrectly over the course of the tournament. Towards the final, the player didn't have too much gas left in the tank because the game against NAVI was like a final. A lot of the mental strength was spent there. We were just a little empty during the final, that's the trouble we had.
You guys pulled out of IEM Melbourne, were you disappointed to miss out on it given that it's the start to the run of tournaments before the Major?
Yes, we were disappointed, a lot, actually. We skipped Melbourne due to health concerns for some of the players, which isn't good news for us and an unlucky situation.
But then again, there's a large run of tournaments ahead of us, we have BLAST soon, Astana soon, we're missing Dallas, but that's an intentional decision so that we can be as prepared for the Major as we can be.
Assuming you're missing Dallas to bootcamp or just rest, is there no concern there? After a couple of the more disappointing results last year a couple of your players said they felt like they needed to play more officials to get back into the swing of things.
You can't know for sure, but what we're doing is using the experience from last year. We skipped IEM Rio, which was widely criticised by the community, but it turned out to be a good one because we got to the final at BLAST World Final, then we won the Major and BLAST Bounty.
Such rest gives the players time alone, because they spend so much time with each other over the course of the season. Also, we'll have some time to stabilise our game.
Going back to those games against Vitality, does it feel like there's a gap between the two teams?
Vitality is the number one team in the world right now, but ourselves and MOUZ are close and Falcons will be soon enough.
There is no player in the world that would be a better fit for Vitality than ropz in terms of roles, chemistry, and firepower. He was a great pick up for them and now they are reaping the rewards.
But we also know our strengths, and if we do everything well, we will have a good chance against them.
There's also been a couple of defeats against MOUZ, even going back to last year when they still had siuhy, why do you think that is?
Regarding MOUZ, we always have close games against them. Even though it may not have looked like it, Spinx was a great pick up. He really strengthened the team and now they look more menacing than they used to.
We have a good match up against them, it's always good games, but we won the most important one in the Major playoffs.
Regarding our other matches against them, we had our ten map points across the two BO3s, so we need to work on closing out games in terms of gameplay and the mental side of it.
Overall, they're a really good team, and if we don't count Vitality, they look the most stable one in terms of structure.
Regarding Falcons, is there any concern about their growth now they've brought in m0NESY?
They look like they'll become a really good team soon, the duo of NiKo and m0NESY is very strong. So if we look at it, G2 with them started winning when they added malbsMd, if TeSeS can get the same impact as malbsMd did for G2, they will be a formidable opponent.
Let's say results stay swinging the way they are currently, with both MOUZ and Vitality seemingly ahead of you, is there a point where tough decisions may have to be made in terms of the roster?
Right now, we're not thinking about that at all. When we got the roster together a year and half ago we just wanted to make playoffs, and we ended up winning four titles in that time span, we're performing well compared to our expectations.
It's definitely a crucial point in the season, though. We'll look at our results leading up to the Major and including the Major, but right now, we're not thinking about it at all.
Your next tournament is BLAST Rivals, how are you feeling about it?
It's an interesting tournament, we're aiming to win it.
