Here at BLAST.tv, we’re celebrating AWPgust, and as part of our celebrations, we are highlighting some of the most exceptional AWPers in history. First, it was the turn of Denmark’s greatest-ever player, device.
Now it's time to turn our attention to Turkey and celebrate one of the most distinctive players in Counter-Strike history, woxic.
A high-sensitivity, left-handed player, woxic gained many fans due to his completely unique playstyle.
With some of the fastest flicks in the game, viewers may occasionally have struggled to keep up with how fast his crosshair was moving, but they never managed to miss a single one of his kills.
Having made a name for himself within the Turkish scene, woxic got his first chance on a big organisation with Hellraisers in 2017. Initially joining on trial, the AWPer did enough to earn the respect of his new captain ANGE1, and was signed on a permanent deal.
In a team that also included bondik, ISSAA, and DeadFox, Hellraisers would go on to not just qualify for the FACEIT London Major in 2018, but to make it all the way to the quarter-finals from the Challengers Stage.
Although they would eventually fall to Team Liquid, by that point, woxic had announced himself as a star, and it wouldn’t be long before a history Counter-Strike team came calling.
With MOUZ’s budget FaZe roster falling apart, and karrigan’s time on the real FaZe coming to an end, the two would find a perfect partnership with each other early on in 2019. In need of a star AWPer, the legendary Dane would turn to woxic to fill that position.
The best time in his career, karrigan and MOUZ saw the best of woxic. Going on two-win ESL Pro League Season 10 alongside the CS:GO Asia Championship and the GG.Bet Beijing Invitational, the team would be one of the most successful in Global Offensive for MOUZ, and woxic was key to it all.
Unfortunately, just as they seemed to be hitting their peak, outside factors would prevent MOUZ from ever truly becoming a great roster. With everything there for them to do so, only an act of God could stop them, and that act of God came in the form of COVID-19.
As Counter-Strike was forced into the online era, woxic began to struggle due to the new environment, as playing from Turkey resulted in a higher ping that would limit his playstyle.
Despite this, and partially due to the uncertainty about how long the online era would last, woxic’s stock didn’t fall, and as Cloud9 promised to build a colossus, the organisation picked him up to be the main star of their new squadron.
A high profile move, it was one that never quite lived up to the billing, and woxic would last just four months on the team before it became clear that online was here to stay and he would never work out.
Sadly, while his stock had been unaffected by the beginning of the online era, its continuation meant it was at an all-time low, and woxic would have to return home to Eternal Fire when searching for a new team.
Having united with Calyx, XANTARES, imoRR, and ISSAA, it was the first time since the demise of the Space Soldiers squadron that Turkey would have a team to root for, and woxic slowly began to rebuild his reputation with the team that represented his home nation.
Although the roster had been unstable, and woxic himself had periods away from the team, they have threatened to break into tier one. A consistent figure at ESL Pro Leagues, they also managed to qualify for the PGL Antwerp Major, but their time there was disappointing.
A player that might have won more had uncontrollable circumstances; we’ll never know how great woxic could have been in CS:GO. Still, his uniqueness means that he’ll be remembered fondly, and as we approach CS2, that’s more than most can say.
