Conquest, Convergence, Convoy, Domination, and Doom Match are the five game modes available in Marvel Rivals’ first season.
Which maps will you play each mode in, and why haven’t you played a single competitive game in Conquest or Doom Match? Here’s everything you need to know.
Marvel Rivals entered Season One with five playable game modes. These are split into two groups, as a pair of the modes are only playable in their respective Arcade queues.
Conquest and Doom Match are Free For All Deathmatch modes with specific. They do not have Competitive versions, but their FFA nature and extremely short respawn timers make it a great mode to practice new picks in.
Most players will be more familiar with the three remaining playable modes, which are Convergence, Convoy, and Domination. All of these are available in both Quickplay and Competitive queues.
Convergence maps are divided into two phases. One team attacks a point, and the other team has to defend it. The defending team spawns 30 seconds earlier, allowing players to get their positions in the point.
If the attacking team manages to capture the point, the spawn points for both teams will change, and the second phase begins. The attacking team will now start pushing a cart, with the objective of pushing it all the way across the map, before the map timer runs out.
Around the halfway point of progress, there is a checkpoint. Reaching it prevents the vehicle from moving any further back than that point, and changes both teams’ spawns again, while also increasing the map timer.
The vehicle moves by itself, as long as it is in control of the attacking team. Having attackers around it will speed it up, and having defenders on it will halt its progress. If the defending team controls the area, with no attackers present, it will take control of the vehicle, forcing it to slowly move backwards.
Convergence is played in the following maps:
Convoy is essentially the second phase of Convergence throughout the entire map. The attacking team spawns 30 seconds later than the defending one, and will encounter a vehicle right outside their spawn.
Controlling the vehicle will make it move forward, even if no attackers are around it. A map timer will start counting down as soon as the attacking team’s spawn doors are opened, with that timer being dependent on each map.
The defending team has to delay their attackers for as long as possible, preventing them from reaching the end or any of the checkpoints. Unlike Convergence, Convoy features two different checkpoints for the vehicle, which will prevent it from ever moving further back from that point, extending the map timer, and changing both teams’ spawn points.
These are the Convoy maps:
Domination is Marvel Rivals’ most recognizable game mode. Dropping the asymmetrical design of both Convergence and Convoy, Domination brings us mirrored maps, with both teams spawning simultaneously, at the same distance from the point.
The objective is the same for both squads, control the point at the center of the map until you get it to 100%. The point can be captured a few seconds after the match starts, but will be contested until only players from one team remain inside it.
Once one of the team takes control, the percentage will start to climb. If the enemy team gets onto the point, the progress bar will keep climbing, until no players from the team in control remain on the point.
When the bar reaches 99%, the team in control will win instantly if there are no enemies on the point. More often than not, though, at least a single enemy will be present, and that will bring the game into overtime. It will remain in overtime until the controlling team eliminates all enemy players, or until the attacking team gets control of the point.
Domination maps are played in a BO3 format, meaning that the first team to win two rounds wins the match.
Here are the maps in which you will play Domination:
The Competitive and Quick Match queues feature the same nine playable maps, with a 10th coming soon. There are some differences in how you interact with the modes depending on if you’re playing Competitive or not.
When queuing for ranked, Convoy and Convergence maps have two rounds, allowing both teams to attack and defend. Ties will lead to an overtime until one of the teams comes out victorious.
You don’t need to push the vehicle to the end of the map to win, you just need to push it further than your opponent. Ties can still happen mid progress, if both teams push the vehicle for the exact same distance.
These same maps will only feature a single round during Quick Match, so if you start off as an attacker, the match ends either when the time runs out, or when you push the Convoy to the end.
Domination maps work the same way in both queues, giving you a BO3 format regardless of the queue you’re in.
