The Classic Rock Paper Scissors
Before we get into the actual Anno 117's best land units, it is important to highlight that the game's combat follows the classic rock, paper, scissors setup. This means that every unit is directly counter by another one.
Spearman counter cavalry, cavalry destroys archers, gladiators do well against spearman, Legionaries beat everything except archers (as long as they keep their distance).
Every unit has a counter, or a major downside. While ranged units, especially archers and catapults, seem unbeatable if you manage to keep your distance and don't get run down by cavalry, they deal splash damage that deals friendly damage, which can be deadly for your own troops.
With that out of the way, let's get into what you're here for.
Anno 117 Best Land Units

While some of the information present in this article obviously comes from our own experience with Anno 117, we couldn't have made it so comprehensive without the help of SiNKiLLeR's excellent 50 Best Tips & Tricks video. It is a long one, but it is worth your time.
Best Offensive Unit
Anno 117's best offensive unit is the Praetorian Cavalry. This is the most situation unit in this list, but it is a must have in every army. Whether you are against other players or AI, you will be facing some sort of ranged threat, usually archers or catapults.
Any Cavalry unit will be key in dismantling such a setup, but none are best than the Praetorian Cavalry. They have the most morale of any unit in the game, and will devastate any ranged unit if they get a successful charge in.
The downside is that they are the most micro-intensive unit to use and you'll need to be careful with how you employ them. You'll ideally be fishing for flanks against unprotected ranged units, and to back off after a charge is successful.
Best Ranged Unit
Archers are Anno 117's best ranged land unit, by far. They are cheap to make, so you can have a ton of them, and they will destroy every other unit in the game. They are obviously dismantled by a successful cavalry charge, but you can counter that, too.
As long as you don't keep your archers unprotected, they will do short work of all enemy units. Just make sure you surround them with spearmen which will counter any charging cavalry, and will be able to hold off a rushing unit of Legionaries or Gladiators.
These aren't perfect, though. Anno 117 has splash damage on all ranged damage, and that includes friendly fire. If you have your archers firing at an enemy unit that is fighting a melee unit of your own, that melee unit should be disposable, because they will be destroyed by your own archers as they take down the enemy.
Best Overall Unit
Anno 117's best land unit is, as expected, the Legionary. Legionaries are one of the most expensive units to produce with their fancy armor, but that's for a good reason. They will beat any melee unit in the game, including cavalry, they have extremely high morale, and great defense.
While they are, like every other unit in Anno 117, destroyed by ranged attacks, they will outlast all other melee units even in that situation. So if your Legionaries are fighting Gladiators as they're pelted by arrows on both sides, they will win out in the end, with comfort.
If you ever manage to get your Legionaries close to ranged units, they will dismantle them almost as quickly as your cavalry. You won't be able to have a ton of Legionaries in your army, but every single unit you have of them will be key in changing the tides of battle. And that is what makes them Anno 117's best land unit.
