Mecha BREAK has had an excellent release on Steam following a great reception during both Next Fests, but this hasn't come without a few hurdles. At the time of writing, the game sits at a Mixed reception on Steam with 61% of reviews being positive.
With most negative reviews covering monetization problems, a lot of people have been left wondering how deep the problem goes. Which leads us to the main crux of the issue: is Mecha BREAK pay to win?
Yes and no. You cannot purchase anything that would give you an advantage in either of the main PVP modes, but you can buy items to make your life easier in the extraction gamemode Mashmak, so Mecha BREAK is arguably pay to win in this niche, tertiary mode.
Mecha BREAK's premium currency is Corite. 100 Corite costs around 1€, slightly less if you purchase one of the bigger packs. The biggest pack you can buy comes with 5405 Corite, while costing 46,99€.
Corite is used to purchase Seasonal Sets and accessories, which are all cosmetic. It is also the only currency that can be used on the Matrix Marketplace, which is the game's Auction House.
In addition to Corite, you can purchase the Strike Archive: Falcon Custom pack for 47,99€, which comes with the following cosmetic only rewards:
Besides this, you can also purchase the Matrix Contract, Mecha BREAK's equivalent of a Battlepass. At the time of writing, it costs 12,99€ due to a 40% sale, but its base cost is 21,55€. The Battlepass will automatically unlock INFERNO, which is a Striker. It will also boost all Mission Tokens gained and give you three free Cargo Rocket Beacon 1 per week.
Cargot Rocket Beacons are used to send items safely to your base from the Mashmak game mode, which is an inherent competitive advantage. Items extracted from the Mashmak can also be put on sale on the Matrix Marketplace, so you can directly purchase Mods, weapons, devices, and supplies for real money.
With the exception of anything that can only be purchased by Corite and the Matrix Contract, all previously mentioned items can be acquired without spending any money. That includes the 47,99€ Custom Falcon pack, but requires an insane amount of luck, as it has a 0.01% chance to drop in a Supply Crate.
INFERNO and the two other mechs that aren't unlocked as soon as your start the game (STELLARIS and SERENITH) are bought using Mission Tokens, which are free rewards from completing quests, playing matches, and getting specific items in Mashmak. Cargo Rocket Beacons can be purchased using the same currency in the Matrix Selections.
With all that being said, players who purchase the Matrix Contract will get Mission Tokens considerably quicker. Given the fact that these tokens will expire once the season ends, a F2P player will need to play a ton more hours than someone who purchases the battlepass to get the same amount of currency during Season 0.
Furthermore, players can infinitely purchase items from the Matrix Marketplace using Corite, as long as players put those items for sale. For the 6v6 and 3v3 game modes, the only items that can be purchased are cosmetics, but for Mashmak that is not the case.
Players can fully mod their Striker using mods purchased with Corite, and they can spawn in with more powerful weapons purchased on the Matrix Marketplace.
So, is Mecha BREAK pay to win? It is in its Mashmak game mode, as paying players will get access to a lot more items than those who are playing for free. For the two other modes, Operation Verge and Ace Arena, which are the main PVP modes in the game, nothing can be acquired with real money beyond cosmetics. Players who purchase a Matrix Contract can get their hands on the three mechs sold in the Matrix Selections faster, but F2P players can still purchase them later, and they can use a 7 Day Free Trial to get familiar with the Strikers.
