Most resources you need to farm in the early to mid game in Arrakis are found in relatively safe areas. You might need to get rid of a few enemies, but nothing too extreme, usually. Yet, there is one big exception to this rule.
One resource can only be found in open-sand, which is Shai-Hulud territory. Don't worry though, we're here to minimize the chances of you getting eaten. Here's how to farm flour sand in Dune: Awakening.
You'll reach a point in the mid game where you unlock the Static Compactor. We went over it in a previous article about unburied treasures, but the main usage of the Static Compactor is to farm Flour Sand and, later on, the spice Mélange.
Even without a Static Compactor you can still farm Flour Sand, but it will be much slower and, consequently, much more dangerous. You'll need Flour Sand to craft Silicone Blocks, which are in turn needed to create mid-to-late-game garments and things like the Improved Blood Refinery.
There is no safe way of farming Flour Sand in Dune: Awakening. With that in mind, our first recommendation is to farm so much in one go that you might not need to ever go back for more. The point of this guide is to minimize the chance of you getting eaten, while also making sure the losses of death happening aren't too large.
You only need three things to farm Flour Sand:
So the first step in our process is to leave all other items in the base, including all equipped garments and tools. You'll want to leave your base naked with only the Handheld Resource Scanner and the Static Compactor. We also recommend bringing an MK1 Sandbike to speed the process up.
The trick to farming Flour Sand is that it does only spawn in open sand, but it can spawn really close to rocky areas. You'll ideally spend a bit of time roaming the edges of rocky areas, scanning around for Flour Sand patches. We got lucky and found on in the rocky area surrounding our base.
Once you do, you have two choices:
To maximize the farming speed, you'll want to get into the middle of the Flour Sand patch and spam the Static Compactor all around you. It will be turned into small piles which can be picked up by holding E (we know). If after one go the worm isn't coming yet, repeat the process. Once Shai-Hulud is angry and ready to eat you, get out and don't come back.
Each pile with the first Static Compactor will need you 49 Flour Sand. We got nearly 300 in under 30 seconds of farming, which will last you for quite a long time. That's how to farm Flour Sand in Dune: Awakening.
If you do get unlucky, or greedy, and fall pray to the almighty Shai-Hulud, don't fret. Worst case scenario is you only lost one Scanner, one Static Compactor, one Power Pack, and an MK1 Sandbike. All these are easy to craft again, so keep at it. The desert giveth, and the desert taketh away.
