Despite following the blueprint of most survival games out there, Windrose gets started quicker than a lot of them. On the one hand, that doesn’t waste your time, on the other it makes those initial hours quite difficult.
Here are our 7 tips to get you started in Windrose, from the absolute basics to creating the foundations that’ll make the rest of your playthrough much smoother.
There are two key things to keep in mind when creating your first base in Windrose: fast travel points and clay. These two narrow our possibilities considerably.
Fast travel points can only be placed by the shore (more on those later) and Clay is always located by the beach. So we recommend that you look for a Clay deposit and then create a base by the shore near it.
Windrose’s tutorial questline isn’t mandatory, but it is definitely the best way to get you started. You’ll have access to your tiny ship before you finish this initial questline, but don’t get carried away.
Completing the tutorial will lead you to a Copper Mine and teach you how to start smelting ore into Copper Ingots, one of the most crucial early game resources. We also recommend you build a few Furnaces and Smelters to vastly speed up your production times.

Sows and Boars are a pain in the bum, especially in the Hard difficulty. They hit extremely hard and can be unpredictable (especially those pesky Charging Boars), but you can’t avoid them. You need a ton of Rough Hides to craft and upgrade Armor, so you need to learn how to handle them.
The easiest way to do so is to master the parry, or Perfect Block as Windrose calls it. If you block an enemy’s attack at the right time, they lose Posture (the shields bellow their health bar) and you don’t lose any Stamina. The key for killing Boars is to not get greedy.
Parry their headbutt and poke them a couple of times. Once they run out of Posture, your next Parry will knock them down, allowing you to do a full combo. Rinse and repeat and you’ll have more Rough Hides than you’ll ever need.
Stocking up on Copper Ingots and Rough Hides isn’t just to fill your coffers. You should prioritize upgrading your Armor and Weapons to the max (that your tables allow) before anything else.

An upgraded Weapon will deal a ton more damage than a base one and upgraded Armor pieces will often be the difference between a one shot and a two or three shot, especially on Hard difficulty.
The first storage solutions you get access to are okay, but they don’t take a ton of resources. To make your life easier and to prevent a boring process of reorganization in the future, you should craft at least a couple of chests early on.
What we personally did was craft three:
Do this early and you’ll have your items relatively organized even if you just run to your base and spam “Deposit Similar” on all your chests.

While Points of Interest are automatically marked on your map, Windrose doesn’t mark most things you pass by, even the useful ones. This is likely because you get access to a vast selection of Map Markers that you can customize and even name.
We recommend you make use of this system a ton. You can start off by marking spots like Clay deposits, or areas with special resources like unique plants or fruit. You can choose which icons you use for each resource and name them whatever you want.
Even if you are addicted to base-building or sailing the seas, take time to explore. We’ve gotten great armor pieces and, crucially, Fast Travel Bells from side quests that start off in random Points of Interest like Shipwrecks or Ancient Ruins.
Getting unique armor pieces early on can make you much tankier and finding already crafted Fast Travel Bells saves you 10 Copper Ingots a piece, allowing you to focus on improving your weapons and your base.
