Footballers just love investing in esports, don't they?
We have David Beckham investing in Guild, Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi investing in KRU, Oleksandr Zinchenko investing in Passion UA and even Lord Bendtner himself investing in a Danish grassroots team called Prosperia Esports.
Now, Bendtner has been joined by one of his former Denmark international teammates in investing in grassroots Danish Counter-Strike, as Simon Kjaer has become the owner of WOPA Esports.
For the uninitiated, Simon Kjaer is the most-capped player at senior international level for the Danish national team.
At 131 caps (and counting) he recently overtook legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel as the most-capped player after facing San Marino in October 2023.
He was also awarded the UEFA President's Award alongside the medical team for their role in saving Christian Eriksen's life after he collapsed mid-game at EURO 2021.
At club level, Kjaer has played for a host of top European clubs, including Wolfsburg, Sevilla, Lille, and AC Milan. He won the Serie A with AC Milan in the 2021-2022 season, the club's first Scudetto in just over ten years.
In a statement released by WOPA Esports, Kjaer said:
"I love playing Counter-Strike myself, and I hope to be able to help young girls and boys find and cultivate their passion."
