jstn. is one of the veterans of the Rocket League scene. Now considering himself an "unc", he took a leap of faith earlier this year to join Gen.G Mobil 1 Racing from Shopify Rebellion and now finds himself in his first RLCS World Championship in three years after advancing from the Play-Ins.
A world champion with NRG back in 2019, he knows exactly what it takes to win the biggest events in Rocket League, and we caught up with him to talk about how he can aid his team to win eight years after his pro career began.
It's been three years since your last World Championship experience, how are you feeling now that you're here?
I'm pretty excited. Definitely nervous, seeing as it's been a while, but it's exciting to be on the big stage considering it's been a while, even though we have to do the play-ins tomorrow.
I'm feeling confident in the team that we can make it through the play-in and play in front of the crowd. We're well-prepped, the vibes are good, everything is on the up.
Do you feel like your role has changed now that you're one of the more senior players?
I do feel like it, yeah, I'm the unc now. Anyone who is older than 20 is considered old in Rocket League.
I'm 23, I've been playing for eight years, I have a lot of experience. I'm no longer the rookie, I'm the veteran, so I try to be a leader even if I struggle sometimes. I'm way better at it now than I was when I was younger.
Photo: Michal KonkolHow does the current Gen.G Mobil 1 Racing team dynamic compare to when you first joined at the start of Split 2?
I think it's the same, we're very open and talkative with each other. We watch VODs and replays all the time, we talk about it all and there's never ill intent towards anybody, we just want to improve so we try to be as vocal as possible.
Now that you're here, is there more or less pressure than throughout the rest of the season?
Now that I'm here, I low-key feel more pressure, because the team that I left last season is also here. I perform well under nerves, though, so I think those nerves can turn into adrenaline and help me do very good.
Do you have a main rival at the event? Is there a player or team you'd like to do better than?
Like I said before, the last team I left [Shopify Rebellion] is also here, so we want to do better than them so that the move was good and justified, and not an equal type of move.
You have a long history with GarretG, are you a Chalked Cast or first touch fan?
Chalked cast, all the way.
Do you watch the podcasts?
Whenever I can, I do. Normally when it's going on I'm streaming, though, so I can't watch it then, but if I'm free I do.
Who do you predict will make it out of the play-ins?
The four teams I think are us [Gen.G Mobil 1 Racing], Shopify, NIP, and ROC. I just think they can out-perform and outclass their opponents.
