Monster Hunter Wilds has just released and the biggest question right now is how you can slay a monster in the game. Well, to be honest, you can either capture or kill a monster, which we will discuss in detail further in the article.
The main motive for this article is to tell you how you can capture the monster in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Before you can capture any monster, you’ve got to make sure it’s close to death but not totally dead. You don’t want to accidentally kill it.
Some monsters have visual cues that let you know when they’re weak. For example, with the Yian Kut-Ku, look for the frills around its head—they’ll lower when it’s almost done.
Your Palico will also warn you when the monster’s health is low. It’s all about paying attention and knowing when it’s time to go for the capture.
Now comes the fun part—setting the trap. You’ll need either a Shock Trap or a Pitfall Trap, and there are also EZ versions available during missions. They work exactly the same, just easier to use since you get them for free.
The best time to set your trap is when the monster is heading into a new area. This way, it’s less likely to run off right away. You can either get its attention by attacking or use your Slinger to shoot a Luring Pod to make sure the monster focuses on you.
Once you’ve got its attention, set the trap in front of you and wait for the monster to walk into it. If it’s done right, the trap will catch it.
Now that the monster is trapped, it’s time to use Tranq Bombs, Tranq Ammo, or a Tranq Blade to put it to sleep.
You just need a couple of Tranq Bombs, or a few shots or slices of Tranq Ammo or Tranq Blade. The monster will fall asleep, and you’ll have successfully captured it.
The key thing here is to make sure you’ve already weakened it enough before trapping. If it’s not weak enough, you might need to whack it a bit more, but don’t go too crazy and accidentally kill it.

It doesn’t really matter which tranquilizer you use—it’s all about how you use them. The main difference is just the method of applying them.
Here’s what you’ll need:
As for Tranq Bombs, you will need one sleep herb and one parashroom. Sleep herbs pop up in Windswept Plains, Scarlet Forest, and Iceshard Cliffs, while parashrooms are in all four areas: Windward Plains, Scarlet Forest, Oilwell Basin, and Iceshard Cliffs.
You might be wondering: is capturing or killing better? Well, it depends on the situation.
For most hunts, the decision is up to you. But some quests might specifically ask for a capture or a slay. If it’s a capture quest, don’t risk it—capturing is the way to go.
However, in most cases, you’ll have the choice, and there are a few reasons you might want to capture rather than kill.
One big plus is that capturing usually shortens the hunt. Instead of dealing with a long, drawn-out final phase where the monster is enraged, you can capture it and be done. If you’re running low on time or resources, capturing might be the better option.
Also, if you’ve been struggling through the hunt with low health or multiple carts, capturing the monster might be your safest bet to avoid losing the quest altogether.
If you’re looking to capture a monster, you will need to craft a few things, and it’s not too complicated once you know what to grab.
First up, traps. You can get trap tools from the provisioner at any base camp, and you’ll need those for both the Pitfall and Shock traps.
