The Destined One’s Journey to the West is filled with shiny treasures, but a lot of those are well hidden. The third chapter of Black Myth Wukong takes us to the snowy lands of The New West, with an impromptu journey to the hellish Pagoda Realm.
There isn’t an actual secret area here, but there is still a lot to be missed in this chapter. Here’s our guide on all secrets that can be found in White Snow, Ice Cold.
This Yaoguai Chief isn’t considered a secret, but is so easily missed that it might as well be one. He is also a crucial component of one of this chapter’s side quests, one with an incredible reward that we’ll get to later.
To get to Captain Lotus-Vision, teleport to the Upper Pagoda Shrine in the Pagoda Realm, take a few steps into the darkness, and drop down. And we mean drop, because if you jump, you’ll probably miss the rooftop and fall to your death. The boss will be right in front of the kneeling Withered Corpses.
The second secret you’ll find is this chapter’s Loong boss. He is the third one you’ll find in the game, and the toughest so far. Much like the previous ones, you need the Loong Scale to be able to fight him. If you don’t know what that is or don’t have it yet, we recommend starting with our chapter 1 guide.
To find Cyan Loong, start off from the Turtle Island Shrine, and head towards the tree to the right of it, after a small hill. Once you cross between the two rocks, you’ll see an opening underneath with what seems like a statue sitting near the ledge. Approach it with the Loong Scale in your possession, and the Yaoguai King will awaken.
His attacks are sluggish in a confusing way, and he deals a ton of damage. If you’re having trouble taking Cyan Loong down, we recommend any thunder-resist curios or spirits you have, as that is the brunt of his damage, and the one that’s hardest to dodge due to its delayed timings.
The Zodiac Village is a secret hub region where you’ll have the four most crucial NPCs in the game. You unlock it in this chapter, and have access to it from any Shrine from that moment forward.
To start off, you need to take down Chen Loong, an Yaoguai Chief that, although he shares the name, does not have much in common with the secret Loong bosses throughout the game. You can find him very close to the North Shore of the Bitter Lake Shrine, as shown in the image above.
This Loong actually is a character boss, and one that will relent before you take him down. Once he does, go back to the Shrine, and teleport to the Cellar Shrine, inside the Crouching Tiger Temple region in the Yellow Wind Ridge area.
There, talk to Xu Dog to get the Special-Made Bone-Strengthening Pellet. Travel back to the North Shore of the Bitter Lake Shrine, and give the Pellet to Chen Loong. Once you do, he’ll give you the Ruyi Scroll, teleporting you inside the painting, reminiscent of the classic Souls Painted World.
Inside it you’ll find the Zodiac Village, your hub that allows you easy access to Xu Dog, Chen Loong, Shen Monkey, and the Yin Tiger. Chen Loong essentially is your gardener, allowing you to easily farm reagents for your medicine.
Yin Tiger is your blacksmith, and the toughest boss fight in all of chapter 3. When you talk to him, he’ll allow you to upgrade armor — which you couldn’t do previously — and you’re able to challenge him. This starts his bossfight.
If you can’t take him down yet, don’t fret, you can try it at any time. We recommend doing it as fast as you can, though, as beating him will unlock a third Curio slot.
If you want to have an easier time, unlock Spell Binder first and max it when fighting the Yin Tiger. He is extremely strong against all your other spells, so this is your best shot at taking him down.
Finding this old man is one hell of a challenge. He is technically not a secret boss, but he is the hardest Yaiguai Chief to find in the massive Valley of Ecstasy area. To help you find your path there, we’re going to rely on images instead of text.
First, travel to the Forest of Felicity Shrine in the Valley of Ecstasy. Run past the wooden gate, while spamming your lock-in button. You’ll soon lock-into a Withered Corpse enemy, who’s guarding the path we want to take.
Take him down and move forward. You’ll get into a clearing with a bifurcation. Go right, and stay close to the rocks on your right while heading forward.
Keep going and you’ll eventually find a bird enemy, take him down, and you’ll see another wooden gate guarded by a rock-wielding mob.
Do not go through that gate, move past it to the left, but keep hugging the rocks on your right side. You’ll find a slope leading down to another wooden gate.
Move past it, and you’ll see a swamp to your right. Don’t go there yet, though. First, go right, and rest at the Towers of Karma Shrine. This way, if you die during the boss fight, you’ll respawn right next to it.
Now, head into the swamp that’s filled with Ginseng plants. Interact with the one in the center, and Old Ginseng Guai will emerge.
The Green-Capped Martialist is an actual secret boss in chapter 3. You can only fight him by completing one of Black Myth Wukong’s cryptic quests, by helping the Treasure Hunter out.
If you explored the area around Chen Loong, you might’ve encountered him already. But don’t worry, we’ll start at the beginning.
Travel to the North Shore of the Bitter Lake shrine in the Bitter Lake region, and go towards where you fought Chen Loong.
Instead of going into the water though, go left, through the large gate. Stay on that path until you spot a large wooden building, and you’ll find the Treasure Hunter asking for help, surrounded by two enemies.
If he’s not there, you’ll have had this encounter already. Just move onto the next step. If he is there, kill the enemies and exhaust his dialogue.
From there, teleport to the Towers of Karma Shrine. If you don’t have it unlocked, just read the Old Ginseng Guai entry in this article. Follow the path in the middle of the pillars, and you’ll find the Treasure Hunter almost frozen on the tree highlighted above.
Cast Ring of Fire in front of him, which will start a cutscene. Once that’s over, move back to the Shrine, and travel to the Brook of Bliss in the Valley of Ecstasy. Cross the nearby bridge, and turn right.
Go down the slope until you spot an icy lake. Run past it, and look for a fire on the right side of the massive stone. Move past the frozen corpses standing there, and jump down.
Mind your step, and keep going down. Jump onto the massive tree, cross it, and drop down on top of another flame. Activate the Melon Field Shrine, and head into the temple directly next to it.
If you followed all previous steps, a cutscene will begin, kicking off your fight against the Green-Capped Martialist.
There’s a corpse lying against the gate in front of the Forest of Felicity Shrine in the Valley of Ecstasy. If you haven’t interacted with it previously, do it now and exhaust its dialogue. You’ll gain the ability to transform into a fox.
This will add an item into your inventory called “Snow Fox Brush”. You can use it to transform back into a fox whenever you want. With this in mind, turn back into your normal form.
To continue the fox’s questline, you need to reach the New Thunderclap Temple. Starting from the Temple Entrance Shrine, head into the temple and up the stairs on the left.
After running up the stairs, jump through the parapet to avoid the enemies. Head into the building above, take down the monk inside, and go up the stairs on your right. You’ll find two more monks. Kill the one on the stairs, and ignore the one above.
Get out through the door on your left as soon as your get up the stairs, and go left again, towards the bridge filled with wooden pillars. Jump through the wooden rampart around the area we’re highlighting.
Look for the massive stairs on your left. Run up them, take down the two enemies on top, and use the Snow Fox Brush before heading into the temple.
Walk inside as a fox, and you’ll start a special cutscene, telling you the story behind these characters. Once the cutscene ends, your fight against the Non-Void will begin. Once you take him down, teleport back to the Forest of Felicity Shrine in the Valley of Ecstasy, and talk to the body again. The quest will be finished, and you’ll get the Snow Fox Brush Curio.
You’ll have noticed the purple seals throughout multiple doors in the Pagoda Realm. One of the first ones you spot, soon after you reach the Realm, has an NPC inside that will talk to you. If you haven’t gone back here since defeating Captain Lotus-Vision, that’s your first step.
The door will now be unlocked, you can actually have a conversation with the Third Prince, the youngest son of the King of the Flowing Sands, the chapter 2 boss. Exhaust his dialogue, and he’ll ask you to take down all his captains.
Captain-Lotus Vision is already dead at this point, and both Captain Wise-Voice and Captain Kalpa-Wave are mandatory boss fights. That leaves us with one target, Captain Void-Illusion.
You can’t actually fight this Captain, as he is already dead when you get to him. To find his body, travel to the Longevity Shrine in the Valley of Ecstasy. From it, look for the nearby tower, go through the left of it.
Keep going forward until you find a massive statue. The body of the Captain Void-Illusion will be lying directly in front of it. Interact with it to get his spirit, and to “claim” his death.
Afterwards, travel back to the Lower Pagoda Shrine, and run back towards the Third Prince’s cell. Exhaust his dialogue, completing his questline. Doing so will reward you with the first of only two Spears available in the entire weapon.
Undoubtedly, Chapter 3’s juiciest secret.
