WBG.Xtreme Gaming, Team Spirit and BetBoom Team bid adieu to their Esports World Cup (EWC) journey as they are eliminated from the Dota 2 Riyadh Masters 2024.
The biggest upset of the day was the defending champions Team Spirit and China's last hope, Xtreme Gaming, both being brought down by the dark horses in an epic David vs. Goliath battle! Let’s take a look at what transpired:
The last remaining Chinese team WBG.Xtreme Gaming suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of BetBoom Team in a straight 0:2 loss thus ending China’s journey at the Esports World Cup at Riyadh Masters 2024.
XG were outplayed in both games BBT, especially in the second game where the former had a good lead at one point in time. After securing a crucial team fight victory, it seemed as if XG were poised to tie the series, however, BBT won consecutive team fights after getting key items on their core heroes like Troll and Primal Beast.
Suddenly BBT were on the front foot and Miero’s exceptional gameplay throughout the series was key to the EEU’s victory against the Chinese Dota 2 team. Thus, BBT advanced to the next lower bracket round to face Tundra Esports.
After taking down OG in a dramatic reverse sweep, they've shocked the Dota 2 fans again by eliminating the reigning champions, Team Spirit, from the Riyadh Masters 2024 in the lower bracket.
The series mirrored their upset against OG. PSG Quest faced a brutal defeat in the opening game after being dominated within 20 minutes. But just like before, they refused to back down.
In the following two games, they displayed incredible resilience, completely outplaying Team Spirit with a disciplined and methodical approach. This victory dashes Team Spirit's hopes of defending their title and further solidifies PSG Quest’s spot as a threat in the tournament.
They now face the tournament favourites Team Falcons in the next eliminator and are only two series away from securing a grand finals berth. Can they pull off another upset?
Tundra Esports survived a scare against a revamped BetBoom in the final eliminator of the day. It was a battle between the equals and both teams were neck-to-neck throughout the best-of-three series. BBT drew first blood after winning the first game.
However, Tundra’s form has been better, if not the best, than BBT and they bounced back to win the series to advance to the next round. They now await the winner between Team Falcons versus PSG Quest.
