Valve have just released a Major update to CS2, and it's one that could have major ramifications for an element of Counter-Strike that we know and love.
Starting with Operation Payback in April 2013, Operations were an integral part of CS:GO, bringing with them new maps, new skins, and missions that could be played with a friend.
However, although new missions and new maps have now been added to the game, this update might just spell the end of Operations.
Let's go over what's been added.
Five new maps were added to Counter-Strike 2 in the new update, with two of those being Wingman maps and the remaining three being regular, 5v5 maps.
The two Wingman maps are Dogtown and Brewery. Brewery, as the name suggests, takes place in a brewery, and has clearly undergone a huge visual overhaul in comparison to its CS:GO release.
Dogtown takes place on a pier and features rides such as a ferris wheel, carousel, and rollercoaster. The map has already been praised online for its visual appeal, which you can see in a walkthrough here.
The three 5v5 maps are Agency, Jura, and Grail. Avid fans will already be aware of Grail, the brightly-coloured mini-golf course inspired map recently won Mapcore's Big Adventures contest.
Jura is set in the Polish Jurassic Highlands. Reminiscent of Cobblestone, it features the ruins of the old Jurrassic Castle.
As for Agency, the final of the trio of new 5v5 maps will be well-known to CS:GO players. A classic from the previous installment in the Counter-Strike series, it will be welcomed back into the map pool with open arms.
Now for the potential Operations killer - weekly missions.
A new mechanic in CS2, weekly missions will offer players with a specific challenge that they can complete in order to earn exp.
Players will get one mission per week, with the level of exp gained scaling depending on how difficult the mission is determined to be. For example, if one player has a mission to win seven rounds on Grail, and another has a mission to win 15 rounds on Grail, the player who has to win 15 rounds will earn more exp upon the completion of their weekly mission.
There is no punishment for failure to complete a weekly mission, it will just expire at the end of the week. Additionally, weekly missions will also not stack. They will reset once a week, meaning that you won't get a new mission once you complete one.
