Although they missed out on the BLAST.tv Austin Major, fnatic ended the season on a high note with a LAN win at Conquest of Prague and two runners-up finishes at Exort The Proving Grounds Season 1 and Glitched Masters Season 2025.
Expecting big things for the second half of the year, the team faced a setback before the season even began, losing MATYS to G2 as the German organisation rebuilt in the wake of Snax and m0NESY's departures from the team.
Having now brought in CYPHER as MATYS' replacement, fnatic's season can finally, truly begin, and as they await the beginning of BLAST Bounty Season 2, we caught up with their star man blameF to get his thoughts on the season ahead.
How have you been finding the year so far?
I'm very happy with how the season finished, after got jambo we were way better.
Of course, we needed some time with him as well, but our three last tournaments before the break were a first place and two second places, and two of those were LANs so I think that elevated some of our players. Myself, I think I played a bit better on LAN.
So, overall, I'm happy with it. Of course, we wanted to qualify for the Major, but we played with a stand-in and had a couple of days with him, so it was disappointing but we wanted to be realistic and it wasn't easy after being told we needed a stand-in only a couple of days before.
Since the break you've had to make a roster move, if you felt like the team was growing, are you disappointed to have been forced into that change?
Yeah, we were looking really solid for the upcoming season and especially when other teams around you are changing, it gives you a bit of a chance to be better. I was hoping that nothing would have changed.
But I am very happy for MATYS, he deserves a shot at a big team so I'll be watching and cheering for him. It'll be exciting to see him on the bigger stages.
It does suck for us, though, because he's a good player, but that's how it is. No one on the team is disappointed in him because he wants to take the next step, we're all happy for him and we just want to cheer him on.
What about yourself? You had a long time on some really big teams and making deep runs at LANs, do you feel any kind of disappointment that you're not there currently? Or does it just serve to be extra motivation?
It's a bit of both, probably. But I think that I'm also getting older, so for sure, I would like to play at a higher level than where the team is, but I also think it would be fun to bring fnatic that way. We were going that way before the little setback, so we just have to see how it will go now, but I think that we're on the right path still.
Of course, it's a little bit more fun playing on LAN, the dream isn't to play online tier two, it's to be travelling around the world playing tier one.
So yeah, I'm hoping that we can take that step with fnatic, because I'm very happy here.
Photo: fnaticYou mentioned your age there, and you're not IGLing right now, but do you think you might go back to it one day and look to bring up the next generation of players?
I'm not sure, I think for now I'm very happy just playing, I think that as well when some players get older their priorities in life change. They think more about families and start playing less, but for me, nothing has changed in the last few years, my life is the exact same and I still grind every single day and always give it my all.
If it ever comes to a point where I feel like my priorities or goals are a little bit different, then maybe I will consider other paths, but for now, I think I'm playing great in fnatic and I'm very happy here so I don't have those thoughts.
You were always a star even when you were calling and you still are now, so how did you manage to pull off switching back to just being a player?
I just tried to keep playing a lot and do whatever my team asked me to do. I don't think I thought too much about it, sometimes I do good stuff and sometimes others do good stuff.
fear is also a very supportive IGL, he always tries to look out for me and jambo and saving for us, so we both benefit from that and having a nice guy like him in the team. I'm very comfortable in this team.
How are you feeling about CYPHER replacing MATYS?
I really like him, when they told me he was coming in I instantly tried to play a lot of games with him and I could instantly that he's a nice guy and a good guy to play with.
He has really good communication, and I really like that, he's very precise. He talks a lot and he can direct people, and top of that he's an aggressive rifler, so he also fits the description of what we need. He's a skilled player and I like playing with him.
As you said he's an aggressive rifler, are you already preparing yourself for the baitF memes?
[laughs] Yeah, and I don't care about the memes and stuff, but it's about finding that balance because we also have KRIMZ on the team who isn't the most aggressive, and fear who can do it but it isn't natural to him, and the same goes for jambo.
If we got a super passive player it wouldn't fit the team, because it's also the same for me, I go for many openings but I'm not an aggressive player all the time, I'm passive a lot of the time so having a player like CYPHER compliments the team.
At the same time, he can also do other roles. He's a smart player that can do a variety of things, he doesn't need to just go run in and die, he can play other scenarios.
Photo: fnaticWhat is your true response to the memes? Do you think you just take a different timing on your trades and that is what caused them? Or do you think it became a thing for a different reason?
I think that for sure when it became a thing in Complexity, I played very passive. Very passive. But it was also a time where I was playing with k0nfig, RUSH, oBo, and poizon, who are all very aggressive players and I think I was extremely passive as a result, so you can call it a baiter if you want.
But, I think if you look at my demos on fnatic, I don't play anywhere close to how I did back in the day, but some people will still hold it against me. That's fine, there's nothing I can about it, but I can find many examples of players doing the same stuff and it only gets pointed out when I do it. That's just how it is and it's something I have to live with.
You said earlier you expect teams to slow down when they bring in a new player, do you think the same will be true for you guys? How has it changed the expectations for the season?
It's hard for this season, because we've had a really bad start due to playing the first officials with a stand-in, and then we were also testing players.
We scraped together a lot of VRS points at the end of last season, so we're in a decent spot compared to where we were, but now it's a hard spot because we've started the season by losing a lot of points.
Now that we can practice with our new player, we have to get results straight away. If we have a slow start then it's going to be hard for us to gather a lot of points.
As for my expectations for the season, I don't really have any right now. It's hard because we just started practicing with CYPHER, but of course, I want to gain in the rankings as a team, but it's just hard to predict. We won't have much practice by the time officials begin with CYPHER, maybe one day per map, and that's just not enough time.
Do you think there might be some kind of a benefit because of CYPHER's role fit?
For sure, I don't think it's impossible for us to have a good start, especially because he talks so well because of his English, it's not super hard to understand him or anything like that.
He comes in and tells us how he wants to play his spots, and then we just accommodate it, so I'm very positive about that. But it will just be hard because the other teams were already playing officials with their new players and we weren't even practicing with ours yet.
You have BLAST Bounty coming up, will there be any expectations in place for that event?
I'll see it more as an opportunity for us, I don't think many people expect us to do anything crazy, but I think we only have to win two games to go to the next stage, which is a great opportunity because any team can win two games.
Even if you just get one win against a team with many VRS points it can also be really worth it, even if you lose the next one, so I just see it as an opportunity for us to make up some points, but I don't have any expectations.
