Avowed’s best items are its Uniques. Featuring good enough stats to rival or surpass their non-Unique variants, with the passives exclusive to their class of item, any adventurer in the Living Lands would be better served with a full kit of Unique equipment.
Here are some of the best items you can acquire early on in your playthrough, regardless of what build and class you choose. All of these can be found in Dawnshore, but we recommend holding out on hunting for weapons, shields, and armors until you have leveled up one Unique to Fine Quality, as that will scale all unlooted Uniques to that same quality.
This shield will be the first Unique item most people encounter, but don’t be mistaken, it is the best shield you’ll get your hands on through the entirety of your journey through Dawnshore.
On top of giving you a very small chance to fully avoid melee damage, it boosts your Maximum Stamina as long as you have it equipped. An excellent stat-boost.
You can find it in the arena where you fought the Elder Dreamthrall Bear, the first main boss you encounter in Avowed. This is at the north end of the Strangleroot. The shield is lying beside the body of an Aedryan Guard.
This gorgeous, burning sword will complement most melee builds right off the bat. You can acquire it pretty early, in our playthrough we did so right after finishing the Message from Afar quest.
As a one handed sword, it is a jack of all trades weapon. It is relatively quick, hits don’t cost much stamina, but they hit hard and apply 10% Fire Damage. Additionally, it will also restore 3% of your Maximum Health when you kill an enemy. If you’re using a parry build, it can be enchanted with a really useful Passive.
The Last Light Of Day can be acquired by completing the Drawntreader side quest, acquired by speaking to Ofryc near Liviana’s Clinic in Paradis. He’ll tell you to go to the Temple of Eothisian. Complete the quest inside and either kill or convince Sargamis to sacrifice himself, and you’ll get the sword.
If a Cold axe is more your taste than a hot sword, Drawn In Winter would be a better choice for your character. This one handed axe hits harder than Last Light of Day, but it also costs you more stamina per hit.
Frost Damage and Frost buildup is extremely powerful though, as it can fully freeze enemies, making them immobile and vulnerable to attacks, or giving you some much-needed breathing room in group fights.
You’ll find Drawn In Winter at the Godless Ruins. You’ll likely encounter this by having the Voice tell you to find an Ancient Memory. Interact with the memory, complete the dialogue, and once you’re done, the axe will be frozen in the stone in the middle of the water. Beware, though, after taking it out, a horde of skeletons will start appearing, and it is one hell of a fight.
Don’t worry, gunslingers, we’ve got you covered too. Caeroc’s Pride is not only a powerful unique pistol, it is also extremely pretty. On top of hitting like a truck and dealing a ton of stun damage, this pistol also deals shock damage.
You’ll be able to find this pistol by accepting the Bounty Target, Tempestuous Luandi quest from the bounty board in Paradis. This will take you to an island south of the city, and Tempestuous Luandi will drop the unique pistol after you take her down.
A spellbook is useful for everyone, even those tried and true fighters in the past. It can help save your grenades when solving puzzles, or assist you in a pinch in certain, tougher fights.
Anextli’s Grimoire is our best choice of an unique grimoire in the early game, as it will be useful even for players who have invested no points into their Wizard tree. Even with no levels invested, you’ll have access to Fan of Flames and Arcane Veil. Higher level Wizards will get Grimoire Snap and Missile Salvo.
You’ll find the grimoire next to Berath’s Gateway Graveyard. Look to the ridge behind the cemetery, and circumvent it through the left, towards the Fractured Shore. Keep climbing up until you encounter a character speaking alone, before something happens to him. He won’t be needing his Grimoire after that.
