Having returned as worthy victors from the Esports World Cup, Spirit have now announced themselves as the favourite to take the BLAST Open Porto crown after winning 2-0 over Falcons.
A series that featured two failed comebacks from the reigning Major champions, they always had their backs against the wall after a torrid start on their own map pick, Nuke.
Falcons have had some struggles on Ancient picks in this event, but it was Nuke that plagued them as they went 0-11 down after a very weak T-side.
A 3k from karrigan managed to secure them their first round on round 12, and they did attempt to fight back int he second half, but with a deficit like that against a team with as much firepower as Spirit, it was always going to be hard to close.
They did bring it back to 13-7, with Spirit’s own T side starting poorly, but the firepower eventually pushed them through, with sh1ro and tN1R sharing the top frag on 17 kills apiece.
We then headed to Ancient, with the series now looking incredibly likely for a 2-0 scoreline given that Spirit were on a 13-map winning streak on Ancient.
The first half, where Falcons began on the CT side, was very even, with the two teams going into the break level at 6-6.
Unfortunately for Falcons, though, their T side let them down again, and although m0NESY almost pulled off an incredible ace clutch to force OT, Falcons fell at 13-11.
