The Perfect World Shanghai Major EU RMR B has already been a hotbed of upsets with Astralis, Eternal Fire, and Spirit both losing to lower ranked opponents, but now G2 are the latest to fall victim to an underdog as they have lost 2-1 to 3DMAX.
A 2-0 game, the win means that the French team will now advance straight to the Elimination Stage of the Major, joining BIG, Vitality, MOUZ, NAVI, and FaZe.
Their qualification also marks the first all-French roster at a Major since 2021, with the last all-French team to qualify being a Vitality squad that featured apEX, shox, ZywOo, misutaaa, and Kyojin.
After beating TSM and Eternal Fire on day one of the RMR, there was little expectation for 3DMAX to continue their winning streak as they were matched against G2.
This lack of expedctation was justified when G2 dominated map one, Anubis, with a 13-5 scoreline. Featuring strong performances from malbsMd, Snax, and m0NESY, the map was much closer to what people would have been expecting from the series than what transpired afterwards.
3DMAX followed that opening defeat with a dominant map win of their own, a 13-6 win on Dust2. Maka starred, he went 26-7 to put the hurt to G2 and send the series to a third map.
Set to be played on Ancient, G2 recovered but were still unable to hold an advantage as the first half played out and ended 7-5. m0NESY struggled with just five kills on the CT side, but there was hope as malbsMd picked up 14.
They kept the map close in the second half, but an incredible 18-8 performance from Lucky saw the Frenchmen stay on top, closing out the map 13-11 and securing their berth in the Shanghai Major.
Elsewhere in EU RMR B, BIG also booked their spot in the Major, they overcame Passion UA in a 2-1 win of their own to prevent the Ukrainians from picking up a third successive underdog win.
