Esteemed esports journalist is reporting that North American organisation Evil Geniuses are set to drop their Counter-Strike team.
Evil Geniuses have caught a lot of flak recently for their handling of business in 2023, including a host of layoffs within the organisation and management of their teams.
One former employee compared working for the organisation to a "jail with snacks".
At one point this year, Evil Geniuses had four Counter-Strike teams under contract. EG Black and White made up their Blueprint Project rosters, while EG Gold was their women's team, and the regular Evil Geniuses roster played in tier-one competitions.
Following disappointing results this number was soon reduced to two, as EG White were released and the majority of EG Black were promoted to the main team. Only autimatic remained from the former Evil Geniuses team, with the rest of the team being released into free agency.
The organisation returned to Counter-Strike in 2019 with the acquisition of the former NRG lineup of Brehze, CeRq, Ethan, tarik, and stanislaw. A deal totalling $3,000,000, they would go on to win ESL One New York 2019 under their new banner.
As the team faded in the online era, EG rebuilt their roster for the return to LAN with the signings of Stewie2k, RUSH, and autimatic. The new roster struggled however, and only autimatic remained a year later.
Earlier this year EG did attempt to rebuild their team with a European core and were set to sign the likes of zorte, EliGE, and electroNic. ultimately this didn't come to pass and EG Black were promoted instead.
Richard Lewis' report states that the men's Counter-Strike team might not be the only team the organisation cuts ties with. The women's Counter-Strike team could also part ways, as well as teams operating in other esports titles.
The report also says that EG could depart esports entirely.
