In a refreshing turn of events, Compulsion Games brought us a title that doesn't take dozens and dozens of hours to complete. If you're one of the players who places a lot of importance on time to beat when making a purchase, South of Midnight should still not be a problem because it is a day one Game Pass title.
So if you're looking for an interesting narrative in an unusual setting, paired with a marvelous stop-motion art style, this might just be the game for you. But you might be wondering: how long does it take to actually beat it, and how many chapters will you play through?
Hazel's adventure takes place over fourteen chapters in total. You'll guide her through a flooded area of the American deep south, in search of her house and her missing mother.
The chapters are:
Once you finish chapter 14, you'll have completed South of Midnight.
Playtime in games always depends on the player, their difficulty setting and prowess, and how much they care about optional content. Despite being a linear experience, South of Midnight hides Floofs (the game's currency) into a lot of corners. On top of these, you also have a ton of notes and other lore tidbits to find in most areas.
According to Howlongtobeat, completing the game takes around 11hours. That is similar to our experience, as we ended up averaging 30 to 50 minutes per chapter, depending on how well we did through the fights. If you are hunting all notes and secrets, you're likely to push to 14h, taking around one hour to complete each chapter.
With only 40 achievements to collect, this is a relatively easy game to do 100% completion with, which would land you at around 15 to 16h played. Regardless of how you decide to play the game, South of Midnight is a great experience.
And again, if the shorter playtime makes the 39,99€ asking price a bit too steep for your liking, remember that it is a day one Game pass title, so you can get through it for as little as 10$, as it can easily be completed in a single month.
