On September 10, 2024, PS5's Lead Architect Marky Cerny officially announced the PS5 Pro.
The mid-cycle upgrade to Sony's console promises to shorten the divide between the performance and quality modes that been the norm in this generation, aiming to achieve both simultaneously.
But at what cost?
The PS5 Pro will be available for purchase on November 7, 2024. It has an MSRP of $ 699,99 USD, £ 699,99, and € 799,99.
This price does not include the disc-drive or vertical stand, which are sold separately.
A bigger GPU, better ray tracing, and an AI-assisted upscaling solution are what Mark Cerny describe as the big three.
This new GPU, likely based on RDNA 4 technology, is able to outperform the PS5's in any scenario, but a new streamlined system will give it an even bigger leeway when it comes to ray tracing.
Mark Cerny described the PS5 Pro's GPU as being "two to three times faster at calculating rays than the base PS5's".
These GPU upgrades will be taken even further with Playstation Spectral Super Resolution, PSSR, Sony's version of Nvidia's DLSS.
The Big Three are Sony's main marketing line behind the PS5 Pro, and what's behind the promise of 4K 60fps, or even 4k 120hz in some PS5 Pro enhanced titles.
On top of these, the console also comes with a 2TB SSD, double the storage of the base models, and better WI-FI support.
At the time of writing this, there are only seven titles listed as PS5 Pro Enhanced:
It's not exactly clear what this pro enhanced nomenclature entails, as there are a few games absent from this list that actually showed up during Sony's technical presentation.
Spider-Man 2, another Sony first party title, is the most notable absence, as the presentation featured quite a bit of footage from the game.
Hogwart's Legacy was another highlight that's missing from this list, despite being mentioned as one of the title most impact by the new ray tracing system.
Others include Final Fantasy XVI, Alan Wake 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and more. Perhaps these titles will be added to the enhanced list before the PS5 Pro arrives on November 7.
Despite its absence from the technical presentation, the official website mentions something called PS5 Pro Game. It reads:
With the PS5 Pro version of the Game Boost feature, you can enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 and PS5 console’s greatest games.
