If you’re just starting Oblivion Remastered and looking for a solid player home without spending gold early on, Battlehorn Castle is a great option.
It’s free to claim and can be upgraded later if you want to turn it into a more complete base. You don’t need any special edition of the game, and it’s available right after the tutorial.
Here’s how to find it, what you need to do, and what you get with the upgrades.
Battlehorn Castle is located just west of Chorrol. You can fast travel there as soon as you exit the tutorial sewers. Start by fast traveling to Chorrol or North Country Stables, then follow the road west.
The castle is hard to miss—it's a large fortress that stands out easily from the landscape.

When you reach the castle, you’ll see four Marauders attacking it. There are some guards fighting back—Battlehorn Man-at-Arms—and you need to help them. Jump in and defeat the attackers.
You don’t need top-tier gear to win this fight. After the fight, you’ll find out that the previous owner, Lord Kelvyn, died during the battle.
Because you helped defend the castle, the guards will hand it over to you. No cost, no paperwork—you now own Battlehorn Castle. This completes the quest called "Of The Same Name."
Once you own the castle, you’ll get a note from Nilphas Omellian, who you'll need to meet at The Merchants Inn in the Imperial City. He handles all the upgrades and supplies for the castle.
Talking to him starts a new quest that lets you slowly improve and customize the castle, depending on what you want and how much gold you’re willing to spend.
The castle is already useful as a free player home with storage and space. But if you’re planning to use it long-term, upgrading adds real value. The costs for each upgrade can be high, especially early in the game, so take your time.
One tip to save gold is to level your Alchemy skill and sell potions. This can help you afford upgrades without needing to grind enemies for loot. Or, if you don’t mind shortcuts, you can use console commands to give yourself gold or skill points.
