ARK Survival Ascended Dragontopia: How to tame Umbra
The Umbra is one of the strongest flying creatures added to ARK Survival Ascended through the Dragontopia content update. Unlike most creatures, you cannot knock it out and feed it to tame it. Instead, you need to complete a series of challenges while riding it in the air.

Where to find Umbra in ARK Survival Ascended
Although the Dragontopia map is scheduled to release later, Umbra already spawns on several maps, including Ragnarok Ascended. You can usually spot them flying around during the night.
Some of the best locations to search are:
- Latitude 30, Longitude 62.
- Latitude 45, Longitude 48.
Umbra spends most of its time flying, but it occasionally lands on the ground. This is the best opportunity to begin the taming process. Avoid attacking or aggroing it because Umbra cannot be tamed through the normal knockout method, and fighting it only makes the process harder.
How to tame Umbra in ARK Survival Ascended
Before you begin, make sure you have a Drake Claw Grappler and enough Extraordinary Kibble. You can also carry Cactus Broth and Bug Repellent to reduce the chance of being detected while getting close.
Follow these steps to tame Umbra:
- Wait until nighttime and locate an Umbra.
- Use Cactus Broth and Bug Repellent before approaching if you have them.
- Wait for the creature to land.
- Sneak behind it and use the Drake Claw Grappler to climb onto its back.
- Once mounted, Umbra will immediately take off and begin a taming challenge.
- Complete the first memory game by remembering the highlighted button sequence and entering it correctly.
- Finish the second challenge by defeating flying enemies without taking damage until the progress bar fills.
- Complete the third challenge by simply flying the required distance.
- Feed the Umbra an Extraordinary Kibble once the challenges are complete.
- Repeat the entire process until the taming bar reaches 100%.
If you fail any of the challenges, Umbra will throw you off. Carrying a parachute is a good idea because getting dropped from high altitude can easily kill you. If that happens, you can grapple back onto the creature and start the taming sequence again.
After successfully taming it, craft and equip an Umbra Saddle before taking it on longer trips.

Umbra abilities in ARK Survival Ascended
Umbra offers strong mobility and powerful ranged attacks, making it one of the best flying mounts currently available.
Air Dodge
Use the displayed movement controls while flying to perform quick dodges. When hovering, Umbra can also attack enemies.
Claw Attack
A basic melee attack that deals solid damage against both ground and flying targets.
Spin Attack
Hold the primary attack button to perform a spinning attack that damages enemies in front of you.
Plasma Blast
Press the secondary attack button to fire a powerful plasma projectile.
Plasma Barrage
Hold the secondary attack to charge multiple plasma shots. Releasing at the right moment lets the projectiles track enemies, even if your aim is slightly off.
Teleport
Fire a Plasma Blast at an empty location, then press C before the timer expires to teleport to the projectile's location.
