007 First Light: Note With Keypad Puzzle Solution

Infiltrating Webb Industries in Knightfall is a multi-step process, but no one blocked me for as long as the keypad outside of the archive room.

Here is the solution to the note with keypad puzzle problem in 007 First Light and how we got there. For those of you in a rush, the code is 1864.

Solution

While you can get the code directly from a nearby safe, most players will first bump into the Note With Keypad Puzzle in the Webb Industries locker-room. The riddle goes:

1. Digit #1: I am one.
2. Digit #2: I am two higher than Digit #3.
3. Digit #3: I am two higher than Digit #4.
4. Digit #4: I am ten less than the sum of Digit #3 and Digit #2

What stumped me at first was the fact that Digit here stands for the keypad position and not number. So digit #2 being two higher than Digit #3 means it is two higher than the third number you input into the keypad, not the actual number 3.

Getting over that first hurdle brought me to the second one: how can I find digit #2? What I ended up doing was trial and error as I am not good enough at algebra.

I started off with 9, which didn’t work (1975 doesn’t work because 9+7-10 isn’t 5). I then moved on to 8 as digit #2 and, sure enough, it worked! Here is how the simple math goes:

1. 8-2=6
2. 6-2=4
3. 8+6=14
4. 14-10=4
5. The solution is 1864

What I’m still not sure of is the hint, which says that “the solution is the year of a famous battle”. 1864 is considered a pivotal year in the American Civil War, but there isn’t a specific battle that stands out.
