Considering they were making their debut with two new players, the performances of Team Liquid thus far at Fall Groups had been a pleasant surprise to many.
Facing off against experienced, unchanged rosters in the shape of G2 and FaZe in their opening game and the Group C Upper Final, they had come out on top in both, and new stars Patsi and Rainwaker had impressed.
However, their momentum wouldn't carry them to another victory against FaZe in the Group Final, the former Major winners would instead show up more prepared for their rematch and never really give Liquid a chance as they secured their spot at Fall Final.
FaZe began their time at Fall Groups with a game against a new look OG team. A team that faced heavy criticism before the event, they showed they have some potential on map one as FaZe required all thirty rounds to beat them on Inferno. Map two was less of a struggle, however, the PGL Antwerp winners wrapped up the series 16-9 on Mirage.
They went on to face Liquid for the first time at the event, and got off to a good start in the series as they claimed Inferno 16-11. Unfortunately for FaZe, that map advantage didn't prove to be enough, and a poor Mirage T side allowed Liquid to take the map 16-14 before they also won the deciding map of Ancient 16-8.
Having been knocked down to the Consolidation Final, FaZe would need to face G2 in order to keep their hopes of avoiding the gauntlet alive. A rough day at the office for G2, Twistzz and ropz dominated as FaZe won 2-0 and booked themselves a rematch with Team Liquid.
A complete reversal of their first match against each other at the event, the Group Final was a one-sided affair.
FaZe opened the series by picking Overpass, the correct decision considering it would nullify Liquid star NAF to just three kills as they won 16-7. ropz continued his strong event with 22 kills, while karrigan put on a starring performance with 19 of his own.
Liquid fared better on their own pick of Ancient, and at 13-11 down, they had a chance to get back into the game as they broke FaZe's economy. A slight mis-read from oSee and a strong forcebuy call from karrigan would change that, however, and as FaZe executed on A, Liquid would fail to win another round and lose 16-11.
