After a pretty straight forward opening day of the Spring Showdown, day two provided some thrilling affairs across the board.
Opening up the day with German side BIG squaring off against Chinese side Rare Atom, the Asian side were hopeful of replicating their impressive form displayed against Liquid at ESL Pro League recently.
Impressive form was indeed what Rare Atom displayed on their pick of Ancient, dominating the Germans 16-7 as Qianhao “Moseyuh” Chen put on a clinic, posting a 1.60 rating in the victory.
Rare Atom were unable to capitalize on Moseyuh’s fine form on BIG’s pick of Vertigo. Despite the Chinese players whopping 1.57 rating, it was all in vain as BIG claimed the map 16-9 and sent the two teams to an Overpass decider.
Overpass was a complete shutout by BIG. Starting on the CT-side, Johannes "tabseN" Wodarz ’s squad secured 13 rounds on their defensive side, before removing any doubt that Rare Atom might come back, taking three rounds on the T-side and setting up a clash with the winner of fnatic vs. 9ine.
While Rare Atom failed to pull off the shock upset despite their best efforts, Polish team 9ine succeeded in their endeavour against fnatic.
Vertigo was pure domination from the Poles as they won nine rounds on the T-side, before completely shutting fnatic out in the second half, not dropping a single round on their CT-side as they locked in a statement 16-6 win on their map pick.
Overpass was a much closer affair, as fnatic went in at the break up 9-6 prior to the Polish side tying things up at 10-10. The mixed European lineup pulled away into a 16-13 victory and sent the two to Nuke, where domination was on the cards again.
9ine looked to have gone just out of fnatic’s reach with a 12-3 first half, but William "mezii" Merriman were determined to not let the game slip away. Making it all the way back to 14-12, the hearts of fnatic fans everywhere were shattered as 9ine closed it out 16-12 and set up an encounter with BIG in the semifinals.
Across the Atlantic in the North American Spring Showdown, it was a far more straight forward affair. Liquid dominated Nouns 16-6 on Inferno, as Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski showed why he is in the conversation for NA’s greatest player, posting a 23-11 statline.
Despite a 7-4 start on the CT-side of Nuke for Nouns, Liquid’s quality shun through as they quickly regained control and closed the series with a 16-8 win.
