First, we saw NiKo eliminated from Major contention. Now, it’s s1mple we see denied.
The greatest player of all time, a mere week ago it would have been absurd to suggest that CS:GO would bow out with the Undertaker missing out on an opportunity to play in front of its final Major crowd.
It was a game for the ages that really deserved to be played in a packed-out Accor Arena; let’s take you through the action.
NAVI were fastest out the gates on Overpass, with long-standing FaZe member rain admitting that “we started a little slow”.
FaZe’s own map pick, NAVI were in the driving seat going into map 2 as a Perfecto masterclass propelled the Ukrainians to a 16-13 victory.
Mirage was a different story entirely, and as rain said, “we just smacked them.” A 16-5 victory for the international squadron, ropz stepped back up to the podium with a 19-7 statline.
A map that NAVI will be kicking themselves for, it felt like not a single of their players ever really joined the server for that game; their highest fragger being b1t with a measly 11.
Momentum shifted once more on Anubis. With the first half ending 8-7 in NAVI’s favour, they stormed to a 15-9 lead and looked set to prevent one of CS:GO’s finest ever teams from appearing in playoffs.
It mattered little. FaZe will be the first to tell you that they are best when their backs are against the wall, and with their backs firmly pressed up against it, they once again proved why they are one of the most terrifying rosters in CS:GO history.
The FaZe comeback cemented the first truly great Anubis map in history. It would take double overtime for it to reach its conclusion, as NAVI snatched a win in the first from FaZe’s hands, but the FaZe steamroll proved to be too much in OT two.
Undoubtedly the greatest player in CS:GO, s1mple looked broken in the aftermath of the game. While his legacy will be untarnished by this result, his performances in this Major will surely play on his mind for a long time.
It’s very hard to keep a great down, however, and you can be sure s1mple will be back with a vengeance when CS2 rolls around.
“Don't worry about that, I won't retire in the next 5 years 100%.”
We’re glad to hear it.
