Round one provided plenty of exciting encounters with some upsets and some solid performances from the favourites. Here is a rundown of day one at the Americas RMR!
Liquid, FURIA, Complexity and paiN were four of the most obvious choices to progress from the Americas RMR. FURIA squared off against fellow Brazilian side LOS+oNe, dispatching Pedro "Maluk3" Campos’ side easily with a 16-6 scoreline.
Liquid wasn’t too sure of what to expect from 00 Nation for their opening game. Marcelo "coldzera" David’s team put on an impressive performance recently at ESL Pro League, however, the sheer firepower of Liquid overwhelmed the Brazilian squad, falling 16-4 on Mirage.
Complexity secured their 1-0 status by defeating Solid in their opening matchup in a slightly more laboured affair than that of Liquid and FURIA. Opening up 11-4 on Inferno, Solid managed to mount something of a comeback before the NA side closed it out 16-10.
paiN has emerged as a real contender in the region since their EPL run in Malta. Facing Paqueta in their first fixture, the blossoming Brazilians showed why they are a team to fear in Monterrey with a commanding 16-2 win.
MIBR were another one of the favoured teams to progress in Mexico, however, their backs are now against the wall. Double overtime was required for Flamengo as they halted Felipe “insani” Yuji’s red-hot form with a 22-20 scoreline.
Replacing Detonate in the eleventh hour, Evil Geniuses now find themselves on the road to Paris following their opening-day victory. Taking down Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo’s team 16-12, Evil Geniuses avoid the immediate pressure that is put onto teams at 0-1.
Elsewhere, Argentinian team BESTIA prevailed against North American team Nouns 16-13 on Overpass, while mixed NA team yur put up a valiant effort on Nuke against Fluxo but were unable to close out a 13-10 lead, ultimately succumbing to the Brazilians 16-13.
